Amazon Q3 Earnings: Reading Beyond The Headlines For Sellers

Amazon recently announced their Q3 2014 earnings results, and surprised Wall Street with more losses than expected. Although the financial results have painted a gloom and doom picture in the press, Amazon continues to thrive from an online seller’s perspective.

It's easy to read the headlines and think that the wheels are coming off the Amazon bus, but the results that matter for sellers actually show that Amazon's 1st Party (1P) and 3rd Party (3P) businesses are doing quite well. The problem areas for Amazon are in media (which grew only 4%) and non-seller oriented areas, such as the Fire phone.

There was a lot to process from Amazon’s Q3 results, but here are a few key points that are especially important for sellers to focus on:

Areas Of Growth 

The most impressive metric was the acceleration of the Electronics and General Merchandise (EGM) product category -- which most 3rd Party sellers fall into. EGM accelerated in North America, increasing from 29% to 31%, making it more than two times the growth of e-Commerce.

Areas Of Improvement  

As previously mentioned, media share was one of the weaker areas of growth for Amazon with only a 4% increase over last year. Media's share came in at 25% of net sales with EGM at a high-water mark of 68% and the remaining 7% coming from other streams of revenue, such as ads and Amazon Web Services.

Also, the 3P unit only saw a slight uptick from Q2's 41% to 42% in Q3. While this may not seem like a big move, the interior math tells us that 3P Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) grew 30% y/y compared to 1P GMV which grew at 19%. GMV measures the value of merchandise sold on an online marketplace.

Areas Of Comparison

Amazon forecasted Q4 total revenue growth to fall within the 7% to 18% range. The current midpoint growth is projected at 12.5% and suggests a tough holiday outcome for Amazon. Taking into consideration that both ComScore and Forrester are forecasting 15%+ growth for the holiday season, any lackluster results in Q4 will be due to slow growth in the media category and tough regions like Japan and China.

As of Q3, Amazon's geographical mix for the quarter was 63% North America, 37% non-domestic.

Amazon continues to expand its network of fulfillment centers (FCs) and highlighted that they built 13 net new FCs this year and an additional 15 sortation centers to streamline the process of order fulfillment and delivery.

From a seller's perspective, this was a strong quarter for Amazon, with the North American EGM sector accelerating and solid international EGM results overall. Although the growth projection for Q4 is lower than expected at 12.5%, we’ll have to see if that is conservatism or a true concern for the fourth quarter.

EU Catalyst 2013

This week was Europe’s leading annual e-commerce event, Catalyst EU from ChannelAdvisor, at which we had the pleasure of attending, sponsoring, exhibiting and giving a workshop at the event.

Other delegates at the event couldn’t miss us, in our high profile red ‘Team Fantastic’ polo shirts (courtesy of Banana Moon), with details about our social and integration programs displayed for all to see. The concept behind the shirts was to make it as easy as possible for everyone at the conference to pick us out and find us if they had any questions at all about our message. The shirts became a great talking point, as it gave us a great interaction point with everyone (as everyone was wondering why we were all wearing Arsenal kits!!).

One of our event highlights came when Link Walls, Vice President of Product Management, ChannelAdvisor, referenced our shirts when he described us as ”the best looking guys at the conference”.

This years event was held at Westminister Bridge Park Plaza, in London, between the 3rd and the 4th of June. The event had keynotes from international companies, such as Tanya Lawler, Vice President of UK Trading, eBay, John Gillan, Industry Retail Leader, Google UK and Scot Wingo, CEO, ChannelAdvisor, to name but a few. A key thing we drew from the keynotes was the heavy emphasis on the need to move into, and strengthen your mobile offering for the ever more mobile world (which obviously resonated pretty strongly with our message).

A particular highlight of ours from the keynotes, was from Chris Poad, Director, Seller Services, Amazon. His talk gave view to the insider workings of the multi-national giant that is Amazon, while giving reference to the future direction of the channel.

The keynotes on the Monday morning, with there heavy mobile emphasis, led very nicely into the first of the workshops, which included our talk, titled ‘Mastering Mobile – How to leverage the power of mobile devices’. Our talk focused on the key reasons as to why all e-retailers should be employing a ‘mobile first’ strategy and how to make the most of the mobile channel. The talk was chaired by both Richard Jones, our Operations Director, and by myself, with us switching around in areas that we each held higher knowledge and expertise in. Overall, the workshop was a massive success, with great feedback from viewers, an uplift in traffic to the stand and a great reaction in discussion around the topic at the event.

Another workshop we particularly enjoyed was Rackuten workshop, that gave insight into how they stretched there worldwide experience in the e-retail market to bring their platform to the UK markets, and the struggles they have had to overcome, moving the brand of Play.com on.

Other than the keynotes and the workshops, the rest of our work was carried out in the exhibition hall at our lovely, shiney red stand. The stand was set up to showcase our latest technology, Sirius M-Commerce, across the range of difference devices we’ve maximised our sites to work across. The chosen site we showcased was the latest version of the County Golf M-Commerce site we have created, shown across iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phones and an iMac as a desktop reference. The stand, coupled with our high profile t-shirts, were a great way to bring home our message from our workshop to the masses at the event, by being able to discuss in more detail the finer points and reasons to maximise your mobile offering.

Overall, we had a great event, with lots of interaction and feedback from other speakers, exhibitors and delegates, and we hope to be in touch with everyone we spoke to in the near future, with regards to moving forward with helping as many people as we can in Mastering Mobile.
