FANNISH FRIDAYS (Pt.2)

Fandom: Dragon Age: Inquisition

Characters: Cullen Rutherford (with appearances from many others)

His hands shake, even as the Knight-Commander grips them in his own. "This cannot continue, Ser Cullen," he says quietly.

The tightness that has been in Cullen's gut and chest for days wrenches around itself a little more. His vision blurs, much to his horror, and his breathing comes faster with each inhale. He can't look at his commander. Can't bear to be in front of him. He wants to sit. Curl up. Make himself as small as possible and hide in all the nooks Amell once did. The world is too big and he can't--it's too much--

Soft leather brushes his cheeks, and Cullen realizes that he's crying. The small keening noise he hears is coming from his own throat. "Lean over," Greagoir murmurs, hand resting on the top of Cullen's head. "Try to put your head between your knees. Breathe, Cullen, breathe with me."

To be quite honest, I’m kind of horrified how few kudos this story has because it’s fantastic. The structure is unique and interesting and works perfectly with the kind of story that’s being told. Every single glimpse into Cullen’s life (and psychology) here is insightful and painful and gorgeous; it’s a really, really great shown-not-told character study. All the character interactions are marvelous. Really, stop reading this recommendation and just go read the story.

And let’s round off this week with a little fluff, shall we? I love any story where a) Garrus looks out for busyShepard and b) busyShepard lets him. Add in a bit of banter and some kindness and we’re golden. <3

She shouldn’t indulge.

Josephine knows this. There are so many other pressing matters, far more important than this, yet whenever she passes Haven’s training barracks, she finds a few moments to stop and watch the men and women work.

Cloaked in shadows, Josephine stands in a doorway, just far enough away from the training ground where no one might notice her. Though if someone does, she can think of half a dozen reasons to be here.

Her gaze falls on Sidony, her blonde hair up in tousled bun, sleeves of her thin linen shirt pushed up high, revealing strong arm muscles. The Herald might not be the most attractive woman in Haven, but she is compelling, and even now, Josephine’s hard pressed to look away.

Across from the Herald stands Blackwall, leaning on a greatsword. He’s breathing heavy, and Josephine thinks they must have just finished sparring. It’s an isolated corner they’ve chosen, far from any of the other practice matches.

“Magic wins again, ser Warden,” Sidony says, strapping her staff to back. There’s a suggestive lilt to her voice, and resonates in Josephine’s core, and she wonders what it would be like to hear Sidony’s voice directed at her. “I’ll take my winnings tonight in my quarters, if you don’t mind.”

Josephine blushes at the words. Surely the two must realize an audience might overhear. While it’s no secret to anyone in Haven that Blackwall and Sidony are… intimate, they usually at least pretend to be discrete.  

But if they think they’re alone…

Her eyes search for a way to escape, to leave them by themselves, with no chance to be overheard, but she finds none. So Josephine presses herself against the door, hoping not to be noticed.

Sidony sits on the fence, then, balancing herself up with her staff.

“You’re not done, are you?” Blackwall asks.

The Herald nods her head. “I just want to watch you,” she says with a laugh. “Maybe I’ll pick up some tricks.”

“You’ll never be in close combat if I have anything to say about it, my lady,” Blackwall says, and Josephine hears the promise in his voice. “But you’re welcome to watch me train. Might make me work a bit harder.”

And then Blackwall takes off his shirt, before picking up his greatsword and moving to a training dummy. Josephine’s never seen him shirtless before, and her breath catches, her eyes hardly able to take in the hair on his chest and some on his back, covering taut muscles and a patchwork of scars.

She louder than she realizes, and Sidony’s head whips around. Their eyes meet, and Sidony waves her over. Knowing she’s caught, Josephine decides to own up, and clasps her writing board tightly to her chest.

“I did not mean to intrude-”

Sidony waves the apology away. “Nothing wrong with watching people train,” she says, patting the space next to her. “I used to try to sneak a look at the Templars while they trained, but they kept us out. Didn’t want to reveal their secrets.”

The amount of work Josephine needs to do is staggering, yet she can’t bear the thought of being anywhere else right now. “Five minutes,” she says, taking Sidony’s offered hand to get up on the fence.

Sidony chuckles, bumping Josephine’s shoulder with her own. “Bet I can turn that into ten.”

As she looks over at Blackwall, seeing the sweat on his back, and feeling the warmth of Sidony’s body next to her, Josephine decides not to take that bet.

this is one of the reasons im putting off finishing fargo tbh. seven and a half years in sd did hella weird things to my accent and im just now getting my chicagoan one back. so i feel you.

I grew up in upper Michigan, so I always had an upper midwestern/vaguely Canadian accent, but moving to Minnesota made it a lot stronger. Now I’m in Wisconsin, and it’s more or less gone back to normal, but every once in a while I’ll say something and I can really hear it.

Think geek! They weren’t too expensive but they use watch batteries so that’ll hit me in the end but I don’t even care!

:D thanks for asking! I’ve promised myself to do one question, then return to my homework for a bit, then do one question, return to homework, etc. We’ll see how long that lasts, haha!

17: Is your character an introvert or an extrovert? How do they handle big crowds?

I’ve been forced against my will to learn far too much about MBTI, so I will say Katria is an introvert, though very close to the border on that. She needs a little alone time to center herself and recharge and enjoys isolation, but other than during those short times, she can be quite rambunctious and sociable, even in large crowds!

20:  If your character was allowed to murder one person without any consequences, who would that person be and why?

This is an interesting question! I think that in her 20′s Katria would have gladly produced a laundry list of people she would’ve liked to murder based on who had wronged her in her life. Her father, her younger sister, various Templars, unsavory folk she encountered in Ferelden. 

But, I think if you asked her this question during or after the events of the Inquisition, she would say that even if she did not face any consequences for it, she would not want to murder anyone. She’s not really into killing people for revenge anymore.

2. Favorite genre of fic?

Ummm... romance, I suppose? But that’s really quite broad. I don’t know, I’m open to reading just about any kind of genre. I think I said before that I like between-the-scenes fics, but if an author can fit in an original adventure or mystery or some other kind of plotline and make it fit with the characters  (especially if it fits into canon), I’m totally here for that, too. :)

9. What is the longest fic you’ve read?

Probably the longest fic I’ve read from start to finish is @tarysande and @w0rdinista‘s From the Ashes. There’s a longer ME fic that I read for a considerable period of time, but it eventually stopped working for me, quite dramatically and frustratingly, so I never finished.
