Direct vs. Metaphorical Autism
Does anyone else feel kinda like me about the representation of autism by name vs. by metaphor? Like, I don’t always relate very strongly to the portrayal of autism with a focus on the autism itself and directly naming it, sometimes I might even specifically avoid it. But if it’s dealt with in a more symbolic way, it can be very impactful: Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Gerald McBoing-Boing (who comes across as a non-verbal autistic child to me), that one episode of Chapi Chapo, even the Pixar short Float (‘even’, because the metaphoric obscuring is paper-thin, and its creator specifically said that this is what it is about) all strongly resonated with me (hell, the last one left me a sobbing mess).

Les Onix was a French television show directed by Claude Vajda and produced by Roger Stéphane.
This puppet show was made in France in the 1970s and is very cool. You can watch the episodes on youtube. But the soundtrack is so creative; I can't stop listening to it.
François De Roubaix was something of an musical genius it seems. I am mostly familiar with him through his work on Chapi Chapo, which is brilliant and also worth checking out.
I used to watch glimpses of Chapi Chapo on the TV set back in my kindergarten, and wasn’t particularly taken by it, but I like this episode. Still, a somewhat nostalgic mood brought me to this episode, and I kind-of like it.
As an autistic person, my first thought was that it feels like a metaphor for autistic child trying to engage with the playtime of others and misreading the room. It is encouraging that ultimately the message is that they might not understand the current dynamic and are prone to disrupting it, but can ultimately wind up enriching it if given the leeway to do so.
What a wonderful message for kids.
