I was planning to make my One Piece movies ranking today because I've been postponing it since last sunday but god (Oda) had other plans. So let's talk about chapter 1159 instead because reading this yesterday felt like being punched in the face repeatedly.
PS: Little edit at the end babes, I got wrong the very end of the chapter!
I haven't read the new chapter and have only seen a few panels, so when this one showed up...
I nearly had a heart attack. I thought it was BB's mother speaking and thought the Rocks D Buggy theory was confirmed 😅 I was so hyped for a second lol.
Okay so chapter 1159 has so much in it that it's hard to keep track of it all!
First, we have baby Shanks and Shamrock meeting their father...
...And then there's this. What the fuck? She would've most likely died out there anyway; he didn't have to do that... but since Shamrock is a Celestial Dragon in the current story line, I suppose that means Garling cared about the little family he created on some level? Anyway, Oda should've shown us the mother's face at least. Maybe in the next chapter?
Also:
I was thinking that this rookie's gotta be important for the plot later and that I've definitely seen him somewhere before, and then-
-holy shit, OF COURSE! This was the trigger; the God Valley Incident radicalized Dragon! He was a marine just like Garp wanted, but then things went wrong. Badly. Honestly made me wonder why Garp stays in the marines; there's no way he doesn't know about all the shit that goes on and on, so why does he go along with it? I can somewhat understand not going against it actively, but by being a marine himself, a strong one at that, he's supporting the system! Will we get Garp's backstory and motives at some point, too?
Also also, Ginny, Kuma and Iva! Of course, we all knew they were on their way there, but after seeing them in this chapter where Dragon was also shown to be on the island, it made me wonder if Ivankov and Dragon already met each other there and they kept in touch since. Or maybe they met up again later, and it was then that Dragon made up his mind on what to do, perhaps with Ivankov telling him more details about what happened in God Valley?
Another hidden name? Okay, got it, fair... now I wanna know how this is connected to Davy Back Fight? Was it a thing Davy Jones started, and so the name?
HOLY SHIT! This means Shanks and Black Beard come from the same island! Do they know? Did they know each other as kids? ARE THEY RELATED!?
Also, Xebec went down in God Valley, right? Did he go down trying to protect his family? Did he stay behind to buy them time? Did Roger and Garp know he had family there!?
This especially makes it seem like Xebec might've sacrificed himself to protect his family.
And points to Harald for refusing to become a mindless dog of the government! Aint no question about it; he let Xebec escape. Saying "friends 'till the end" might be overdoing it, but they had trust and respect for each other whenever it mattered the most for sure!
Dragon and... Shanks' mom? Did Dragon put Shanks in that treasure chest? If so, how come only him but no Shamrock? Why did Dragon fail to save the other?
...Actually, where are the babies during this scene? Did Garling take them somewhere while the wounded mother of his children could do nothing but watch? How did Dragon, or anyone else, get to where-ever the twins were held?
And there's Baby Black Beard and what I assume to be his mother, whose face we also don't get to see. Of course not. And they seem to be wearing chains... is it because the government already caught them, or did the Davy clan perhaps go against their own, ones that they perhaps considered to be outsiders?
But damn, God Valley Incident is so much more important than one would've ever thought... it gave Garp the title of the Hero, and it radicalized his son. It sent Shanks, who later became an emperor, to the sea. It set three revolutionaries (in addition to Dragon) out to the sea and turned them against the world. And it gave Black Beard a reason to loath the world! He's what, two years old? He probably remembers at least something of that traumatizing time... does he remember the faces of any of the people that were there? Like White Beard? Roger?
Dunno what Oda's gonna hit us with next, but this is definitely the most important chapter in a long while!
So Blackbeard may have a sibling?
Both the fantranslation and official translate BB's mom saying she wants her CHILDREN off the island*, and thats really interesting to me.
*Now yes most times Japanese does not have a way to diffrentiate nouns that are and aren't in plural mode, like if I said りんごもっています ("ringo motteimasu") you wouldn't be able to tell if that meant "I have an apple" or "I have apples". That is how most nouns work in Japanese. Hoyever, if you were to slap a たち ("tachi") at the end of a word, you would suddently turn that noun into a group of people. Like if I said りんごたちもっています ("ringotachi motteimasu"), that would suddenly translate to "I have the apples" (mind you, this would also make it sound like the apples are sentient creatures and I may be holding them hostage, so you wouldn't use "tachi" the same way you just slap an "s" at the end of a noun in English to make it plural) All of this to say, if BB's mom said she wanted her "kodomo" off the island, we can't really tell if there's multiple kids or not. BUT if she said "kodomotachi", then yeah, there HAS to be multiple kids
Xebec earlier in the very same chapter said he had a child two years ago, Teech is two years old at this point so that perfectly adds up. And based on the English translation it seems like Xebec only had one child-- of course, if you read the little Japanese lesson I just gave you we both understand that unless Xebec very explicitly said he only had one (1) child then we can't be 100% sure Blackbeard doesn't have a twin (or isn't a triplet etc etc).
So our options are
A) There's a minor mistranslation; Xebec had multiple kids two years ago, BB has a twin sibling (or more) (or they might've had more kids since BB's birth and he was talking about how he had his first child two years ago) B) There's a different, minor translation; BB's mom only has one child she wants off the island C) There's no mistranslations; BB's mom had a child with someone else before having Teech with Xebec, BB has a step-sibling (or multiple)
I dunno, this is interesting to me, I'm just fascinated to see which it is
EDIT: Read the comments lmao I am just stupid
Be Here Now
One Piece has made me feel many emotions over the years. It has made me ponder many deep questions. As of this chapter, we can now add "How much would the sudden kidnapping of Taylor Swift disrupt the global economy?" Like...it sounds absurd but imagine if Elon Musk snatched T-Swizzle away right now. Tell me that wouldn't cause enough disruption to be able to say the same thing.
So Shakky was one of the "prizes" at God Valley. And we are getting full into God Valley which is very interesting stuff to be seeing right now. Ochoku was the traitor, based Don Marlon establishing himself as one of the coolest characters with the least time in the story, and I do like that when shit gets real Gloriosa is absolutely shattered. Also...I get it girl. I had a tiny fraction of being kind of an "it girl" in a very localized context and that made me want to open a bar in the middle of nowhere.
Silly bonus post because something crossed my mind hehe.
Duke Nukem voice* "Time to return to the Flower Capital and eat apples, and I'm all outta apples."
Is gunko gay for this...?
