I've spoken about this before but I believe this needs its own post. manga is a medium where both illustrations and dialogues are both used and panelling is a huge part of that. its layout should always be considered when analysing manga. If you search about the process of creating manga, you’ll see how many corrections the writer goes through before eventually it’s approved. Each and every panel serves a purpose - why was it done like that? what is the writer trying to convey? the visual is just as important as the dialogue. Now let’s look at this scene right here:
“Farewell... my one and only...” is in it’s own separate panel. Just by reading that, you’d think the statement ends then and there. It tapers off; it’s wistful. The next panel you see is Naruto staring back at him. Whatever Sasuke is saying is cut-off by Naruto’s face, so we readers still have the impression that sasuke is solely saying ‘my one and only’, and that’s the end of the sentence. Then, we get the panel where sasuke says ‘...friend!!’. But the ellipsis in front of it, which is indicative of a pause, prolongs the addition of the word ‘friend’ to the sentence. It’s a heavy, deliberate silence filled with meaning.
Kishimoto could have easily put the the ‘farewell, my one and only... friend’ in the same bottom panel. But it would have had a completely different effect. So he didn’t.
