i really need people to be so fucking careful in and around discussions of literacy because stuff like "this culture didn't develop a written language ergo they are mentally inferior to us" and "people with this disability are unable to read ergo they are mentally inferior to us" have been eugenicist talking points for a very long time

As someone who deeply cares about the world of Hisui and PLA, seeing this tribute to it deeply moved me, and I wanted to document it for posterity, especially for those who might not have access to PLZA. I hope that all the details and text are legible. Thank you for reading to the end!
my area has tons of historical Dense/Mixed Use Housing templates and developers never want to draw from them and I am Mad
why is it NIMBY to some people to say "I'm not opposed to new dense housing in my area at all; in fact, I'm for it! but I don't want it to be basic cubes or glass towers since that's not what the area looks like, people like the character it currently has, and people who need affordable housing deserve NICE housing, too (and presumably also want to move here for the character it currently has, as opposed to other areas with more modern designs)"
but it's somehow not NIMBY when developers refuse to propose anything besides basic cubes and glass towers
we're not the ones who dug in our heels first, it seems to me
✧What if Wanderer and harbinger!reader knew each other before his memories got wiped from the Irminsul? And what if you met each other again after no one remembers him? Well, I guess this is the find out fic.
✧fem!reader // 2k w.c // reader has a kind and soft personality (not in an over exaggerated way)(okay and also a bit of a poet at the end. Whoops. 'tis the Scara effect I fear) // slight mention of the recent archon quest but there is no major spoiler
⋆ “I don’t care,” said Scaramouche, as one of his detested colleagues asked about his opinion on the newest harbinger the Tsaritsa recruited.
⋆ "She’s too naive. How pathetic," said Scaramouche as he saw you laughing and smiling like life wasn’t the cruelest thing done to mankind.
⋆ "Glad to see your strength is as high as your stupidity. At least that’ll give an excuse for why the Tsaritsa let such an idiot take charge," said Scaramouche, as you both finished your shared assigned task, barely scratched by it.
⋆ "You’re stupid," said Scaramouche while you laid on the grass of the castle’s garden, the silver light of the moon caressing your smiling face gently as you were admiring the stars above you, right next to his judging stance. Like it was something special that didn’t appear every night if the sky was kind enough to lift his veil. Like there was actually something worth looking at.
Him, you see, had learned pretty early on that everything this world held was despicable and there to misguide you in the cruelty of its sources. And you were stupid not to see it too.
⋆ "She’s… not awful. She does the job. I just wish she would stop dumbly flashing her teeth at everyone and everything," said Scaramouche, as Arlecchino asked him about your latest shared mission. It appeared the Tsaritsa thought you two to be a good duo. He couldn’t argue with that.
⋆ "Do you think by producing enough light the world will stop darkening? Ha! You probably do. So foolish of you," said Scaramouche, as you smiled brightly to your troops after losing a portion of it to a tough battle.
He saw you spend the last hour going from man to man to cheer them up one by one. Were you so naive you thought this would change the reality of the outcome still playing in their minds? As for the one he did see having a less defeated attitude after your talks, then they must be as crazy as you are for thinking smiles and hope will be the solution to their sorrows.
Scaramouche’s face was even further away from a smile, as you answered him in a most unexpected way 'So you do think I enlighten things. Impact on the world or not. Thanks Scara!'
⋆ "I don’t get her," murmured Scaramouche, as he watched you from afar, yet again stargazing like you’ve never seen stars before. But maybe that’s what kept you sane after all. To see beauty hidden in cruelty. To see worth in where lies deception. To see the bad and embrace what’s good in it. Maybe that’s where you took your light from. The shadows.
⋆ "Maybe her smile was the cruelest sight amidst this merciless world. Maybe this was what irritated me. When the world couldn’t give back the light she offered," thought Wanderer, as he was being defeated, the last strike coming to him at full speed, while his mind slowed down from a still memory of your light.
⋆ "Just call me Wanderer," he said, as he presented himself for the second time in his life to Arlecchino, Sandrone and you. These two stayed the same as ever, you however, seemed to have changed in the painful time he walked away. He would hate to admit it, but in the mere months you two were apart, he had desperately missed the warmth your smile bathed him in every time you were together.
And right then, it seemed he wouldn’t be able to finally touch it, your eyes a mere shadow of what it used to be.
⋆ "You don’t. I don’t recall ever meeting you," Wanderer said, his lie a set of claws ripping at his chest as he did so. Your face—which seemed to have a spark of light when you approached him to ask if you had ever met before—shut down as quickly as it lit up. He mourned it deeply.
⋆ "Are the recent events the reason why I have yet to see a true smile on your face? Or has the world become too dull for you to enlighten it with a part of yourself?" Wanderer asked in a voice closer to a whisper, tired of not seeing your ever present bright smile anymore, tired enough for him to ask a question so telling about his own feelings it almost didn’t sound like him, scared of the answer he might get.
All your smiles and laughs felt dull compared to your times together and he truly desperately felt like slowly losing his mind over this. He had never realized how much he had missed it, and now that he was faced with the reality that he might actually never again see joy on your face, he thought maybe going mad would be the only logical outcome for him.
Upon hearing his question filled with hidden desperation, you just shot him an interrogating look, and before you could answer him, sounds of shouting made their way to the Nasha Village.
⋆ "Your strength is still as big as your stupidity! What exactly did you do while I was sleeping to end up so hurt? You would have perished already had the Moonchanter not been so gifted! To save everyone, you need to save yourself first," shouted Wanderer right after the battle had ended and he found himself back in front of your very much injured frame.
For a second, he thought your wounds were even more serious than he thought, so much so that you lost your voice. Or at least your lack of answer made him think so for a few seconds, before he noticed the storm of thoughts spiraling behind your eyes. Thoughts that you seemed to have too much trouble organizing to give him an answer. And despite his patience for you to gather your thoughts together, you chose to stay quiet and left him there with no explanation to hold onto.
He felt like falling.
⋆ "What?" Wanderer said with a strangled voice, as you came to him with a determined face, finally breaking the silence you had made him endure for days and oh so graciously putting a ground under his feet for him to stand on. Telling him nothing but one truth 'I knew you. You knew me.' And there was no denying that with the way you looked at him like a lie would not only not be believed, but would also result in hurt of distrust.
So he too left this time. Unsure what to do nor what to say. Scared of finding out what future your frown was trying to get to. He was scared. He hated being scared.
⋆ “How did you know?” asked Wanderer, in a voice so close to a whisper yet so clear it felt like glass ready to shatter under any light touch. But despite how his head felt like spinning around on itself, and how afraid he was of your answers, he still asked.
“How could I not?” was your answer.
He did not get it.
In fact, he rarely understood much about you. All he knew was how much he enjoyed hearing you. Back then and today still.
“How could I not when your voice was the one telling me the same sentence that kept coming back to my brain like the song of a missed and cared for home for weeks on end, with no explanation as to whom it came from? No memories of its owner? How could I not when this one sentence that has been running in my mind for so long, making me ache like no other thing ever did, just came to my ears from someone my brain doesn't recall knowing, yet my heart has been screaming for since the moment my eyes fell on you?”
And Wanderer knew he missed your smile, knew he missed your light, but he never knew how much he missed your touch, because this, unlike everything else since he found you for the second time, was a first in both lives he’d live. Your hand holding his own. Your eyes looking at him like you found the answer to all the questions the universe had to reveal yet. Like the stars in the night sky, free of its veil.
He didn’t know what to answer. He didn’t know what to say. He didn’t know how to talk.
He liked the way your hand felt against his, he liked the way you looked at him, he liked the way you felt real.
And he hated himself for not telling you the truth earlier.
“I’m sorry…” was all he managed to say. He looked into your eyes and searched for resentment, for any reproach you might have, yet all he found was a flame the size of a spark, the one he was so desperate to find back into your eyes, albeit much bigger than what it is now.
“I’m not mad, I just… wish to understand.”
And Wanderer got that. He owed it to you. Every explanation and clarification you asked, he gave it to you.
And by the end of it—when he thought that this was it, you finally got an explanation, you would go back into your life, and him his, feeling like he lost the light of his life for the second time, and that he deserved it as much as before—your hold on his hand grew tighter.
He looked at you in such a confused way, that you couldn’t help your teasing words “How did a lost cat like you manage to pull through all the hardship you went through?”
He looked taken aback for a second before faking annoyance, although not without a barely hidden smile—he truly missed your familiar banter. “Lost cat? I see you didn’t lose your habits of bad mouthing me in every way possible either. Don’t call me that.”
And of course, you ignored him completely and kept on voicing your thoughts outloud. “You must have made some lifelong friends, while I was away, unaware that someone dear to me was suffering… I should be the one apologizing, not you.”
Wanderer just stared at you, silent for a few seconds, taking in yet again the feeling of your gentle yet firm hand on his, and sighed loudly. Like he was seeing a disturbing truth you weren’t aware of. “While I admit you were dear to me… I don’t know if I could say the same for you about me. I’m even fairly certain it wasn’t the case.”
“Oh Scara,” you laughed, “trust me, it was. And still is.”
And he could deny it, he could tell you that no, you must be mistaken, but the way you used his old nickname—which he told you about—paired with your beautiful laugh he thought he would never have the delight to hear again, made him stop his voice right before it started.
How could he deny a statement that produced the most pleasing sound he had ever been graced to hear? Surely he wouldn’t be the one breaking that. Especially when your laugh finally, finally sounded the way it used to. Especially when it felt like the whole room was enlightened by the cheerful sound your kindhearted self produced.
He truly felt like he woke from a ten year long nightmare full of darkness, and that your voice was the pathway to the light he was so desperate to reach.
And oh, reach he did, as the next thing you said was truly a blessing to his ears “Would you allow me… To not only feel, but also form memories of my care for you? New ones for us to share?”
He didn’t hesitate nor tried to feign hesitation as he replied “Once again, your stupidity has for only match your strength. Yes, I want to. Was that even a question?”
However, as true as what he said was, he couldn’t prepare himself for the radiant smile you gave him and the warm feelings of peace mixed with the strong fire it created in him. He felt like exploding and healing at the same time.
He still didn’t know if a smile could heal the world, if your ideal could be fulfilled, but the warmth you brought to him definitely healed his. And he knew that in your terms, this was definitely what you would call a success.
this has been in my drafts for two weeks, and I finally got to finish it :)) I like my Scara a bit too much and I fear the Nod Krai archon quest did not help my case (archon quest which I finished two days ago like the forever late lady I am but WHATEVER)
the beautiful and horrendous and morally questionable NELLE belongs to @cupcakeshakesnake and i am eternally grateful they have created upper management farmer which continues to bless my day
