Character Survey: Impressions
So, I was looking at some character surveys and found one that was a bit different from what I usually come across. :)
The original is here: http://character-resource.deviantart.com/art/Character-Perceptions-291448439 by Deviant Art user Character-Resource.
It's about Impressions. I think it's an interesting and telling way to think about characters because it gets at not just their traits but the different ways we hide or reveal or alter ourselves in different settings.
I typed it out and made a bunch of changes, added a catagory, corrected some grammar, etc.
By the way, this is really long and not all categories would necessarily apply. I would encourage people to use surveys like this as thought experiments or to pick and choose what they want to write out. That's my personal take!
1. First Impressions (What would someone think about your character upon seeing or meeting them for the first time? What do they first notice about them? What are their initial thoughts? Would they think positively or negatively of them? How close are they to the truth? After having these impressions would they like to get to know them better?)
2. Strangers' Impressions (How would someone who had never met your character and only heard of them through other people/history books/rumors think of them? How would they have heard about them in the first place? What sort of stories would they have most likely heard? Would the stories be exaggerated? In a positive or negative way? Would a stranger find them interesting? Would they admire or despise them? Would they want to meet them in person?)
3. Friends’ Impressions (About how many friends do they have? How do their friends feel about them? What makes them want to share this character’s company? How close are they to the character? Is their friendship true or built on lies? What don’t they like about the character? What sort of aspects would they downplay or try to put out of mind? What makes them stick around?)
4. Family’s Impressions (How does their immediate family or someone who they have known for years feel about them? Are they close or distant? What do or would they fight about? Have their opinions changed about them over the years? Do they know any secrets about them? What do they know about them that no one else does?)
5. Rivals’ Impressions (Who antagonizes, competes with, or challenges your character? Is the feeling mutual? Is there a primary focus or will they just fight over anything? Is it a fair match? Is it worth fighting for? Are they friendly or bitter? In what ways are they and their rival similar to/different from each other? Under what circumstances, if any, could they put their differences aside and stand together?)
6. Enemy's Impressions (What makes their enemies hate them? How would their enemy negate or pick apart different aspects of their personality? Are they justified in doing so? How much are their opinions misled or exaggerated? Are their opinions and reasons powerful or superfluous? Would they change someone else’s mind on the character? Is it possible for the enemy to change their mind on the character or is there anything they would/could commend them on? Who is in the right?)
7. Authority Figures' Impressions (Someone like a teacher or a boss who was in direct control over the character - how do they feel about them? Do they get in a lot of trouble? Are they respectful? Do they care about positional authority? What things do they do best and worst? Are they someone they want working for them? Do most authority figures think of them in the same way? What makes them stand out to them from all the other people they encounter/have had in the role?)
8. Coworkers' Impressions (What does someone who your character works with on business, teams, projects, etc., think of them? Why do they work together in the first place? Did someone make them or was it of their own choice? Do they get along? What makes it difficult for them to work together? What makes it worth sticking together? Would they change their coworker if they could?)
9. Lovers' Impressions (What would someone who was deeply in love with your character say? What made them fall in love in the first place? Did they get what they expected? What about any unexpected surprises or disappointments? What quirks do they find appealing and which ones annoying? What are some flaws in their relationship? Is their relationship built more on emotional company or physical intimacy? Would they change anything about them?)
10. Flings/Crushes/Admirers' Impressions (What about people who are attracted to the character but don’t love them? What attracted them? What do they want out of them? Is the benefit physical, social or political status, financial or other resources, popularity/fame, humor, personality, etc? Did they get what they wanted - why or why not? Why did they not love them or was it the character who didn't love in return?)
11. Self Impressions (Who do they see when they look in the mirror? Do they like it? What would they change? What would they put on a self-evaluation? What do they think is their best feature? Do they have an accurate view of themselves? Do they lie to themselves? How much is their opinion affected by those around them?)
12. Postmortem Impressions (Imagine someone standing above your recently deceased character’s headstone/place of death. Would they say a few words/perform any ritual/become emotional? Would a stranger mourn them or would they be forgotten in the world? Would people who knew them look back on them or events fondly? With regret? Would their opinions change about them after death? What would they remember most about them? What would they forget? What would they alter/mess-up?)
13. Author's Impressions (How do you feel about your character - not as a character but as a person? Would you want to meet them? What would you do if you met them? Would you get along? Would you admire them/dislike them? How are you similar/different from them?)
