Seeing more of that inane ‘character A must go through long term therapy or they aren’t addressing their trauma’ BS around, so here goes.
Everybody’s different? Every single person or character is different. No two are going to react the same way to bad shit and no two are going to have the exact same needs in the aftermath.
Everyone is going to have aftereffects from going through something terrible, but what those look like depends on the individual. Whether they develop PTSD or not is unique to that individual and can’t really be predicted. Anyone can develop PTSD after a traumatic event, there are no qualifiers for it, but not everyone does.
How people react to Traumatic Bad Shit in their lives depends on their life experiences and situations, personality, the culture they’re from, their age, you name it. It’s not about whether the trauma was ‘severe enough’ or whether that persona was ‘strong or weak’. Everybody’s different.
Everyone is different, so someone addressing their trauma can look very different and still be addressing it.
There’s no long-term therapy or bust rule. That just isn’t how trauma works in the real world.
Sometimes addressing the trauma is time with a therapist. Sometimes that’s a long time. Sometimes its a couple sessions to get somebody started on the right track. Sometimes that’s simply time to confide in a friend. Sometimes that’s a break from routine. Sometimes its adding something new into your routine that allows you to cope. Sometimes that’s group meetings. Sometimes its just having enough time for real introspection and understanding yourself.
No one of these things is more superior to the other. There’s also no expiration date for pursuing any of them. That is why it is so important to listen to the individual in your life who might be going through something, whether you think what they’re doing is ‘best practices’ or not. It just needs to work for them to get to being their best self.
If you’ve put the effort into your characterization, your characters are unique. Someone with a deep-seated mistrust of therapists probably isn’t going to benefit as much from traditional western talk therapy even if you think they ‘should’. Someone who goes to therapy and stops doesn’t have to be written as a failure or like their loved ones failed them by not ‘making them’ continue. Etc, etc, etc.
Everyone has different needs to recover and move on after a trauma. If you aren’t leaving room for that reality in your fiction or your personal life, it’s really time to take a step back and reevaluate.
I got this idea from conversations I had with friends. I want to try doing this for all of the turtles, and I welcome recs from you guys if you have any fav fics that match your headcanons for them.
First up is a list of fics I admire for their unique portrayals and interpretations of Raph. They may not always be Raph-centric, but they explore different aspects of his personality and ultimately prove there are a lot more layers to his character than just the “angry hot-head”. For example, if he is angry at something, the fic will reveal the deeper, legitimate reasons for it. These fics are insightful and inspiring; sometimes even influencing my own perceptions I have for him. Perhaps they may do the same for you. ;)
I will try my best not to give away major spoilers as I explain the character traits used in these stories.
Enjoy!

Night Skies by The Dragon's Scribe
— Status: T-rated multi-chapter, completed 2014, *****
(WARNINGS: gore and potential character death)
— Character Traits: A sinister paranormal event happens worldwide; affecting everyone, including the turtles. People start losing their conscious emotions in exchange for gaining unusually cold psychic abilities. Raph however, remains mysteriously immune to this emotional change. Why is he so special? (Extremely fitting portrayal of him as an audience surrogate too!)

Colorblind by StillThunder86 2012 Award Winner
— Status: T-rated multi-chapter, completed 2013, *****
(WARNINGS: intense psychological trauma and disturbing imagery)
— Character Traits: He is not immune to mentally breaking. The final straw that shatters his sanity must be something that betrays his fundamental sense of loyalty and embodies his deepest fears. That scene of horrific psychological torture freaked me out too. You’ll see why his sense of self breaks and develops dissociative identity disorder as a coping mechanism. How can he recover from this?!
Fade by Dierdre 2005, 2006 Award Winner
— Status: T-rated multi-chapter, incomplete 2005-2011, *****
(WARNINGS: character deaths, disturbing imagery)
— Character Traits: A horrific accident renders him emotionally scarred and depressed; thoroughly suffering from PTSD, flashbacks and all. He must survive the best he can with April and care for a mentally catatonic Leo as well.
Hushabye by Aubretia Lycania 2008 Award Winner
— Status: T-rated multi-chapter, incomplete 2008, *****
(WARNINGS: sensitive content)
— Character Traits: Even mentally disabled and missing part of his brain due to a terrible accident, his core remains trapped in there somewhere, struggling as hard as he can to communicate his thoughts to his brothers. He can only do that in limited, toddler-like ways. God this is painful and tragic to read. Not for the faint of heart!

Over Cocoa by RedWritingRebel

Red In The Silver Lining by Abbess-Marie
— Status: T-rated multi-chapter, ongoing 2012-current, ****
— Character Traits: An unfortunate accident happens to Leo, which forces Raph to become the leader in his stead, against his will. He would much rather have earned this position on his own merit, not because there was “no other choice”. How can he step up and deliver when it seems Karma is against him now?
Send in the Clowns by Kallasilya 2008 Award Winner
— Status: M-rated multi-chapter, completed 2009, ****
(WARNINGS: torture and disturbing imagery)
— Character Traits: It’s an inhumane experience as he’s used against his will as a commodity for entertainment. The suffering of fellow ‘beasts’ and the cruelty of his captors will force him to weigh both the animal and human sides of himself in return.
Ship of Fools by Swallowraven 2006, 2007 Award Winner
— Status: M-rated multi-chapter, incomplete 2006-2007, ****
(WARNINGS: graphic imagery and mild adult concepts)
— Character Traits: Chapter 3, ‘The Communion of Souls’, POV passage ‘The Lady Lyris’: “He was both…endless darkness and endless fire; both of them vital and ferocious, both willing and able to utterly destroy, and both able, when they chose, to give warmth and solace, if only one could endure its terrible, overwhelming energy. It was a soul so powerful it threatened to consume the being it inhabited.” Holy shit!
Silence by LucyToo 2007 Award Winner
— Status: M-rated multi-chapter, completed 2007, ****
(WARNINGS: physical and mental trauma)
— Character Traits: His fierce protectiveness of his brothers and self-sacrifice because he cannot bear to see them suffer in his stead. He would much rather face death than see them hurt. He is not immune to the fear of that experience though. Poor dear!
The Halfway Point and Endgame by Tori Angeli 2007, 2008, 2009 Award Winner
— Status: M-rated multi-chapters, completed 2009, *****
(WARNINGS: sensitive adult content and severe mental trauma!)
— Character Traits: He is not invincible and his physical strength matters not after suffering from the traumatic experience of an act of rape. Tastefully handled, this story thoroughly explores his damaged mental state and strained attempts to even being healing. A truly upsetting, but inspiring story of his recovery. Not for the faint of heart!
TMNT: Dust of Life by princessebee 2007 Award Winner
— Status: M-rated multi-chapter, completed 2007, ****
(WARNINGS: drug use, prostitution, and disturbing content)
— Character Traits: He cares deeply for the safety of the citizens of New York, including even the grayer working groups who are just trying their best to survive. When something sinister starts happening to them, beyond most people’s notice, how can he step in to help them?
Walking the Line Trilogy by Aubretia Lycania 2007 Award Winner
— Status: M-rated multi-chapter series (novel-length); completed 2007, *****
(WARNINGS: controlling domestic abuse and sensitive adult content!)
— Character Traits: Although he mistrusts strangers and has seen the darkness of NYC throughout his violent escapades as the Nightwatcher, his unconditional loyalty and love for his family makes him view his brothers as inherently good at all times. He is, therefore, ironically the most “innocent”, as he does not automatically assume people he already trusts to have ulterior motives. If he discovers the latter, that becomes a source of his anger and frustrations, to both those who used him and at himself for a trait he perceives as a weakness. His hardened and unapproachable exterior, grumpiness, accent, aloofness…all of that is a façade and habit developed since childhood to shield his core from getting hurt and exploited by others again. What a tragic babe. Oh, and he tends injured pigeons that have fallen into the sewer too, so they can return to the sky again. Not for the faint of heart!

Preludes and Bound by KameTerra 2008, 2010, 2011 Award Winner
— Status: T-rated multi-chapters, ongoing 2010-current and completed 2010 (respectively), *****
— Character Traits: If Raph ever falls in love, it will be for genuine reasons. He is not a shallow guy. It will be an unexpected, profound, uncontrollable, and frightening experience for him, and he will hate himself for allowing it to happen. He will also have to weigh his loyalties for the one he loves versus his family/friends. It is definitely not going to be easy. Raph/April.

My Enemies Aren't The Ones I Fear by Elphaba-Rose
— Status: M-rated multi-chapter, completed 2011, *****
(WARNINGS: non-explicit adult content)
— Character Traits: This was the fic that finally made me understand the point to Tcest. Handles the topic seriously and thoroughly covers all the drama and angst that arises from such taboo feelings. Uses many of the same Raph traits from Preludes/Bound, particularly the self-loathing. Impressive. Raph/Leo.
Bulletproof by Elphaba-Fae
— Status: NC-17 rated multi-chapter, ongoing 2012-current, *****
(WARNINGS: explicit adult content!)
— Character Traits: This is ‘My Enemies Aren’t the Ones I Fear’ ON STEROIDS. (By the same author.) But this time the turtles are older, Splinter has long passed, tensions are gripping, the angst is crushing, the fears are devastating, and desperate times call for desperate measures. Raph’s fierce reluctance to give in to his feelings, remaining behind a bulletproof façade of indifference – no matter what, is one of the reasons for the title. What can possibly go wrong? Casey/Raph, Raph/Leo.

My opinion on Raph: As you can see from these examples, I hold Raph in extremely high regard and see him as a fundamental part of the TMNT. To be honest, if I read a fic that does not supply adequate reasons for his anger, or only portrays him as someone shallow, I often drop that fic immediately. That is because I often view a writer's understanding of his character as a baseline for the emotional depth and poignancy of a fic as a whole. :) I similarly react the same way for the other turtles too.
