char-ientism sorry dude you lost me at the "him talking made him less cool" thing. like sorry but I can't really sympathize-- man, majestic beasts become 10000% more majestic and badass and "superior-to-thou" when you give them the ability to talk. Same goes for pokemon, I am SO confused when people say they "didn't like" that Lugia could talk, in fact I get disappointed when Legendary Pokemon DON'T talk. Oooor when they give them a sucky voice/actor. (Seriously, I think my life is just 99% hoping that majestic creatures get a majestic badass voice. And not.... whatever the fuck voice they gave to Arceus in that movie. Poor Arceus.) Anyway yeah, dragons who CAN'T talk can be the blandest thing ever, to me, unless you give awesome them up some other way. like the way the httyd dragons are super creative and emotive, or the way the dragons in Avatar are super wise and always seem to be hiding some secret but they can never speak. I mean dragons are awesome just for being dragons, but we see them all the time, so they need to be more than just a spectacle.
anyway yeah, we always hear those classic stories of a dragon on his trove of treasure, who burns down towns and lusts after gold, all that stuff. Yet, strangely, it's rarely EVER been attempted to bring that to life on screen. And now, FINALLY, The Hobbit comes along and does it-- and man do they do it perfectly. Like.... I feel like I have seen a dragon on a trove of treasure. Like I have been in a town that's being burnt down by a dragon. And that is amazing. (No joke, the scene on botfa is so immersive my heart was pounding like crazy HE IS SUCH A BEAST) Not to mention he is like the perfectly updated portrayal of the classic evil/western dragon. Like the nerd in me can't handle it, man.
Aaaaand the rest of that you can learn from tolkien, I'm pretty sure. He explains it in the books and stuff. Sorry I couldn't be much help oooppsss
