I thought I’d share the progress of my creation so far from a birthday gift. I’ve turned some Kaffe Fassett 5” squares from Freespirit Fabrics into disappearing 4 squares and then bought some more fabric by Freespirit to frame the blocks which will eventually end up a lap quilt. It’s my second quilt that I’ve ever made. And I’m dead proud of it so far. Although it is a little too bright! 😎😎😎
Happy Go Lucky Baby Quilt by Carla

Made with a charm pack of Happy Go Lucky by Bonnie and Camille for Moda. The blue fabric is Robin's Egg from Moda Bella and the white is Free Spirit Winter White (I think). I quilted it 1/4 from the seams with Aurifil 50 wt in white and hand quilted lines along the borders with Aurifil 12 wt. The binding is from Jenean Morrison's line Silent Cinema. Backing is from Lizzy House's line Hello Pilgrim. Blogged at coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2013/06/a-happy-go-lucky-baby-quil...
After a stretch of making exclusively improv quilts, sometimes I crave a simple, traditional project. My pink and neutral scraps bins hav...
I *love* the look of this pink cross quilt - there isn’t a tutorial for the block on that website, so I kind of constructed one of my own in order to make my own block.
Michelle refers to this one as “server fire” due to the lower left hand block (IKEA Nummer fabric). Here’s my made up version of this using mostly 5″ blocks.
And yes, I did refer to it as the “Thicc Cross Block.” Please note that the B block is a bit fudged and will probably need to be trimmed down to 5x5 once it’s connected to the D block. Good luck!
MSQC pattern I watched from a youtube video. It’s made with charm packs, but I only had two instead of four, so it made a nice little throw from my grandma.
They’re christmas prints in blue and silver, which matched Gramma’s decor.
I just did some straight lune quilting across it in both diagonals, with a navy bubble minky on the back.
When Gramma passed two years ago, her adopted son and his wife asked to have this as a reminder of her and of course I said yes.
Made a little quilt. Could double as a baby quilt, table topper, or even pet quilt. Batiks and some black on black that was left over from backing another quilt. Quilted it in black so it blended in with the background and popped just a lil on the colour.
Given that I have worked in a fabric/haberdashery shop for over 2 years and have only just managed to have the time to make a quilt of any type is a massive deal. The fact it’s for my 3 month old niece also makes it super special!
I wanted to keep it really simple and beginner quilter friendly so there was less chance I’d mess it up. Moda has a free pattern called ‘One Charm Pack Plus’ which is perfect as all you have to do is sew a charm pack together along with some borders.
I knew that I wanted the ‘Fish Tales’ charm pack right away, it has a lovely mix of pinks and greys that goes with the baby’s room but also some lovely blues and greens that make it a bit brighter and likely to last as she grows. Since her name is Lily, the lily pads HAD to be used as the backing. It was too good to pass up something so perfect!
Onto the hard bit, organising the squares....There are some quilters I’ve met (my boss included) that have a knack for haphazardly putting the squares down and it being perfect. I am not one of those people. It stressed me out far too much trying to avoid having a section with too much of one colour. I eventually settled on this with the help of one of my furry project overseers.
Pulling everything together would probably have went quicker if overseer number two wasn’t obsessed with the sewing machine...
Or comfort testing the quilt. Again, as it was my first I stuck with easy diagonal quilting lines across, nothing fancy at all as I didnt want to run the risk of having to unpick it all and ruin the fabric. After about an hour of trying to find a tutorial that was clear enough I finally mastered the continuous bias cutting technique, bound it all up and set to hand sewing the back.
Points aren’t as sharp as the probably could have been but meh, it’s a baby quilt.
So pleased with how it all turned out, roughly 36″ x 36″ which is a great size for putting in her pram, using as a play mat etc.
Little finishing touch added! Unfortunately when I popped by to see Lily she was already sound asleep and all snuggled but she is the cutest bean I’ve ever laid eyes on (I am totally biased), and I can’t wait to see her grow with her blanket!
