the movie is based on the myth Orpheus, where the musician falls in love with Eurydice, she dies, and is transported to the underworld. he goes back in to look for her and Hades is all like "you can take her back, and trust that she's following you, but if you look behind you to check, she will be sent back to the underworld. so he does but he looks behind him and they're separated forever.

In the Come What May finale, Christian looks back at her once at curtain call, and then she dies. To symbolize that moment.
