“... So if I put down an eight, it means you skip a turn?” Spencer asks with a frown, as if he weren’t the one to suggest playing this game. The round’s not even started yet and Spencer is breaking his own no-phones rule for the sake of checking the game rules yet again. He’s pretty sure Switch is just Uno without the colours, but Poker was way too confusing so here they are.
The sun is starting to rise now, the air warming just slightly and the black sky softening as a hint of orange creeps over the horizon and the porch light tries to decide if its services are needed, flickering on and off every few minutes. They’d overshot it a little, up for the past forty-five minutes in fear that they’d miss it, but dawn is on its way now as they sip their second round of cappuccinos.
“What the heck did we do in Texas without phones and music?” He asks once he’s finished dealing out seven cards for each of them, words mumbled as Spencer looks over his hand and the smart speaker continues to carry music out from where it’s playing in the lounge. “I swear, sometimes I try to remember what we did back then and I come up blank. It wasn’t that boring, was it?”
