I had a lady yell at me because we don't have self-checkouts. I'm a human checkout, ma'am.
My sister used to work on the checkout in a grocery store and she told me about this interaction she had the other day.
Customer: *buying a toothbrush*
My sister: How's your day going?
Customer: I just went to the dentist and found out I have a bunch of cavities. I guess it's about time I buy a toothbrush
My sister:
Who took this literal actual picture of me at work?? And seriously, what are y'all doing with all those bananas?? Do you actually eat them? Or are they going off in your fruit bowl, just like mine do if I aspire to eat them by bringing some home.
working in retail can be soul crushing, but then you serve a lady who lights up and excitedly tells you “you smell so good! What are you wearing?!” and everything is ok again
Things to do as a customer: from a checkout chick
1. When an item does not scan, do NOT say “That means it’s free!” No bitch. You’re not funny. You’re not original. Sit the fuck down. Who even fucking started this whole idea.
2. DO NOT just come to my register and just put your items right in front of me when you see I’m busy. I get it. I’m here. Funnily enough, I saw you. I just need to finish writing this hold form. Don’t be fucking rude. Get your ass back in line and wait until I call for the next customer.
3. GET OFF YOUR FUCKING PHONE. It’s common fucking courtesy. You would hate it if you’re talking to someone and they’re too busy being on their fucking phone. Like, seriously.
4. Don’t assume that I’m stupid. I’ve had customers talk so condescendingly to me, like I’m too retarded for a different job. I’m 18 years old. This is my part time job. I am in law school. I am not stupid. Even if I wasn’t in law school, or if this was my full time job, or even if I was 40 years old, that doesn’t mean I’m stupid. You DO NOT have the right to look down on me (or anyone else) just because I work in retail.
5. Don’t act like you know how to do my job. I know how to do my job. I know how things work here. You know shit all. If an item doesn’t scan, I need a product code. I cannot just “enter the price”. Fuck off.
6. If you decide you don’t want something, give it to me. I will put it in the returns basket. Or put it back where you found it. Don’t just leave the item somewhere random. Do. Not.
7. Don’t get mad at me if we don’t have something that you need urgently. A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part. Don’t be a disorganised fuck. PLAN. Or find an alternative.
8. And for fuck’s sake, TAKE OFF YOUR GODDAMN EARPHONES.
Do you see these? They’re recycling bins. Customers use these for the plastic bags they don’t want to use anymore. They’re not for rubbish!
Girl power
Tonight at work a father and his son and daughter approached the counter. In their hands each child had a sticker book. The small boy had a truck sticker book and his sister had smiley faces. After sharing with each other what they had chosen, the (older ) sister decided she too wanted truck stickers. I had a little moment of happiness as this you girl seemed undisturbed by gender conformity. Then evil struck and the dad turned around and in the voice that all adults use for young children said "you don't want trucks you're a girl". My heart stopped. I was ready to say something friendly like "I would want the truck stickers too" (I don't like trucks at all but solidarity and all). This young girl however thwarted my plan as she turned to her father and said "I don't care I want trucks" my heart sang and I scanned those stickers like I have never scanned anything else in my life. ANOTHER TRIUMPH against GENDER NORMS!
