TL;DR Version: The new Cheesy Bacon Fries from @McDonalds use real bacon and their classic fries, but ruin the whole thing by topping it with cheese sauce instead of melting shredded cheese. The Strawberry & Creme Pies are a step up over their regular apple pies, but are a little too doughy. Full Review: I went to McDonalds last week because I saw a sign out front advertising their new cheesy bacon fries and another sign announcing that the strawberry & creme pies had returned so I added one of each to my usual Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese. I tried the fries first and was largely disappointed. While I enjoy McDonald’s French Fries and really appreciated that the bacon appeared to be freshly cooked and cut, the cheese was its downfall. I really hate fast food cheese sauce; the kind of cheese you’d get with gas station nachos. If they had sprinkled shredded cheese on the fries instead, these would have been great even though the fries are generally a little small to support the weight of toppings. I know not everyone shares my distaste for cheese sauce, so if you are a fan these might be your thing. Meanwhile, I still enjoy the strawberry & creme pies because of the contrasting strawberry and vanilla creme fillings. However, instead of being a little bit crispy like a fried pie, my recent experience is that the dough casing seems like it’s not cooked all the way. The consistency isn’t fried dough as much as it is dried out play-doh. The medium order of cheesy bacon fries weighs in at 560 calories, 34g of fat, 51g of carbs, and 15g of protein. The strawberry & creme pie weighs in at 290 calories, 15g of fat, 34g of carbs, and 3g of protein. If you’re gonna get a pie, get the strawberry & creme instead of apple.
