Cherry blossoms continue! 🌸 Framed by these delicate flowers, the Jefferson Memorial casts a picturesque reflection on the water of the Tidal Basin. Dedicated in 1943 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the architecture of this marble memorial is on full display with its many columns and domed roof. Today is the National Cherry Blossom Festival opening ceremony! Did you know that the original trees were planted 105 years ago?

In 1912, the United States received a shipment of 3,020 cherry trees as a gift from the government of Japan. These were a replacement for a gift of trees in 1909 which had to be destroyed because they were infected with root disease. The trees were a token of friendship between the two nations. The first two trees were planted ceremonially by First Lady Taft and Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese Ambassador. In 1935, the city held its first Cherry Blossom Festival. Several trees were vandalized in 1941 in retaliation for the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor.
