“Up Against” by Cheryl Pope

Working in a multitude of mediums, artist Cheryl Pope addresses issues of connectivity and identity that inform the way in which we live our lives today. 

She begins with relationships and experiences in her everyday life that she finds to be confrontational or in need of examination, and manipulates their innate tensions to coerce participation or engagement on the part of the viewer.

Little Lady Reads Interviews Cheryl Pope 

LLR: Tell us about "The Adventures of Princess Zaria", in your own words.

CP: The Adventures of Princess Zaria: The Quest for the Three Precious Gems is a children's book geared towards girls ages 4-9 although younger girls (and older) have enjoyed it. The main character is inspired by my daughter, Zaria. The book is about a little girl named Zaria, who is told that her name means princess. She goes on an adventure to find those things she thinks would make her a real princess; only to find she has been a princess all along.

LLR: What do you hope young ladies take from this book?

CP: We're hoping young girls take away that every girl is a princess. We convey that princess is synonymous with beauty, intelligence, honesty, service to the community and everything that's good.

LLR: If you could collab with any other Children's Author, who would it be and would you write about?

CP: I love the Junie B children's book series. If I could collaborate with her, that would be awesome. It would be fabulous to see Junie B meet Princess Z. Since I love hosting parties, I could see Junie coming to Princess Zaria's 7th Birthday Party( a title I'm toying with). I also love other local children's authors in the Midwest. Of course, they are too numerous to mention but I know many would have so much to offer.

LLR: What is next for you?

CP: Well I actually have a princess brand. My next book, Princess and The Bee will be released this winter. I will be hosting our 7th Annual Princess Chocolate party next month. Our signature Princess Ball will be in April 2018. We will host 2. One in April in Michigan and in Nashville in October.

LLR: Say something to your readers.

WALK BACK WITH ME: This Wednesday, July 15, from  2:00PM–4:00PM, artists from Cheryl Pope's Walk With Me #3 invite the Chicago community to join a conversation about the experience of the opening performance for Just Yell : From Within. Video and photographic documentation will be screened for those who missed the initial performance. Light refreshments will be provided.

Poetry Foundation, 61 West Superior Street, Chicago IL. Free admission

The corresponding exhibition is up at the Poetry Foundation through August 28. In Just Yell: From Within, Cheryl Pope and a group of young poets from Chicago public schools activate various places and spaces of the Poetry Foundation through installation, sculpture, and spoken-word. Borrowing themes and tactile relics of American high school culture, Pope and the young poets address issues of violence as they plague the city of Chicago at a rapidly increasing rate.
