Strawberry Mentos - Huang Renjun
(Based on this song by Leanna Firestone on TikTok)
Renjun looked nervous. His hands didn’t normally shake like this and he didn’t normally sweat so profusely that it dribbled down the back of his neck. But he was with you, so how could he not be?
You were nervous. Your knees didn’t normally buckle when you heard someone’s laugh, you didn’t normally blush when they talk about the myths and mysteries of the universe. But you were with Renjun, so how could you not be?
“The sky looks like city lights, don’t you think?” You whispered to him, the two of you laying on top of the soft picnic blanket you had packed. The stars twinkled in acceptance as the two of you gazed upon the dying lights, the wind sighing in agreement as it settled around the blanket.
“They do, a bit I guess.” Renjun whispered back, his fingers slowly grabbing your hands, your fingers immediately dancing until they intertwine with his. This night was perfect.
“Y/N?” He asked
“Yes?”
“Do you believe in aliens?”
The question shocked you but you knew Renjun and his love for all things supernatural and spooky so it was normal question from him.
“To an extent. I believe there’s something out there. There has to be, there’s no way we can be the only species like this in the entirety of space, but if I think about it too much, I can’t sleep and then my head starts to hurt, so I try not to think about it too much.”
Renjun’s eyes lit up at your response, rolling onto his side as he shifted his view from the stars above to you, the greatest shining star in the galaxy.
“You think so too?” He beamed, his smile reminiscent of a child’s. You nodded your head and sat up. The brisk flow of breeze gliding against your skin and even on a dark night like tonight, you can still feel a warm glow to it.
“I mean, there has to be something out there...right?” You whispered.
“Y/N?” Renjun asked.
“Another question?”
“Can I kiss you?”
Your heartbeat picked up speed at his words, pounding in your ears and butterflies hatching from their cocoons in your stomach. Your answer was slow but sure.
“Yes.”
Renjun scooted closer, eyes locked into one another before flickering down towards your lips. With a final breath in, your lips touched and the world became lost in your senses.
This was the first time you had ever kissed Renjun but there was something familiar about it. Something nostalgic and homely. That taste, why was it so familiar?
Strawberry mentos
The candy you had eaten so much as a child, it almost gave you cavities twice and your emotional comfort snack. The candy you had loved so much back then was the taste of the boy you were growing to love now.
He pulled away and his eyes dazzled like he had taken all the stars from the sky above and placed them one by one in his eyes while you weren’t looking.
“Strawberry mentos?” You asked him, your voice shaky from the surprise and adrenaline pumping through your body. Renjun nodded.
“I remember you telling me that they were your favourite and I had never tried them before. I now buy them in every store I can find them. I pretty much have a stash at home.” He chuckled boyishly and his smile, his pretty pretty smile, brought a bright smile to your lips.
And when I tasted strawberry mentos, I knew you were the one
