im really proud of the birb
There hasn’t been these big leaps and bounds as far as introducing new food, the process of weaning can take months because his pellet diet does provide a lot of nutrients and vitamins for a rounded diet. But pellets shouldn’t be the staple, and nothing beats fresh veggies and other good foods with electrolytes and other essentials.
But he has been foraging through the veggies I give him. I toss a few pellets in, just to get him to go through the food. Y’know, you show the bird their choice goodie then toss it in. He seems to enjoy the carrots, he’s tried brussel sprouts, but the flavor throws him off. The texture though, the texture is appealing
I’ve set up a routine where he gets the veggies early in the morning, when he’s hungry. But he’ll receive supplements of pellets, so the veggies are a choice and not perceived as punishment. Birbs are most receptive to positive reinforcement, and he needs encouragement.
It also helps when I feed the chillchilla. Recall, chillchilla is a flock mate (this is what the birb thinks), so when the chillchilla starts eating, this prompts the birb to go over and eat something.
A lot of this is just working with your companion birb, understanding needs and that sort. I want him to have a good healthy life, with things that will build his confidence and his personality. He’s so smart, but it’s a trial to introduce new things and provide him enrichment. But he deserves more, and I want to work hard for them.
