TBT This was where it really started for me. Chinatown Fair. Where if you were truly nice playing Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters, or even DDR this place was your church. Originally the main attraction was a chicken that was undefeated in tic tax toe. After the chicken “Retired” the venue sought out new ways of making cash. Namely video games in 80s and 90s. This place was a huge inspiration for me to pursue martial arts even though I was sickly little scrawny kid with asthma. The characters from the games inspired me to be curious about my own journey of self discovery. Most specifically the character RYU from street fighter. He had traveled the world as a vagabond to seek out the worlds best fighters... on foot. After his master Gouken was mysterious killed he didn’t track his killer instead he went on a search for himself. Whenever you would finish the game with RYU the epilogue would always reveal a little bit of his personality which was always an optimistic perspective . The game sparked my want to travel,self discovery, and combat. Especially when I was feeling particularly depressed and unmotivated. One late Sunday night I’m outside CF and I notice a new shop across the street. I had no money so gaming was not an option so I walked across. I walk in and there’s trophy’s, pictures, awards and an enormously muscular black man sitting at the counter. “Is this a new weapons shop?” “He rolls his eyes and says “No brother, this is a school.” He gets up shows me around the dojo and I’m instantly hooked! First of all a black man owning a school in Chinatown was UNHEARD of. Second of all, I need to make this dude my Gouken so I can become a master and travel the world!! I was unemployed but I found a job that week and saved 25 % of everything I made just to go to that school. After a couple yearsI got my black belt (I had gone every day training 2 to 3 hours a day every day.) If it wasn’t for that lonely night in Chinatown 14 years ago, I would have never pursued martial arts, personal training, made a living to support my daughter or become who I am today! 🔥🙏🏽🔥 #strotherpt #chinatownfair (at Chinatown, Manhattan) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrDfADaHPs8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1dhx4f5omvuxj
