Damn it all! I've been saying it since I got here that nobody should be doing research alone! Especially not on zombies!! That's standard operating procedure in almost every goddamn lab! Why did they let him work alone? Why - why did this happen to Chris? We were friends! He would tell me all these stories about about his research and his daughter and just the way he'd talk about them - his research and his kid both - like they put the stars in his sky! I've never seen someone light up the way he did when he started really explaining things. Apparently they used to do experiments with ant farms together and I just...I just...why did this have to happen? Why him?
Hey, um… I’m sorry about your loss. Chris sounded like a nice guy. He didn’t deserve to go out like this.
Sounds like there’s going to be a sort of, er, memorial service? His death really hit a lot of people hard, so I guess the runners are putting something together to commemorate him. It’s sometime this weekend, I think?
I don’t know if funerals are your thing. They’re not really mine, I skipped my brother’s, but… Well anyway, I heard they’re good for getting closure. You should drop by it if you get the chance.
And again, I’m sorry. Really, I am.
Runner 10 looks like shit today lol is there a cold going around again
Zombies Run S3M17 Carry Me Home
I ran this mission on March 1st. Wanted to do a full 5k, but in the middle of the run, a friend called and said "come join me for lunch." Then I detoured and stopped at 4.5km.
Spoilers beyond this point:
This image was AI-generated. Chris McShell is running.
All the talk about veggie lasagna made me hungry, to be honest. Maybe that's why I said yes to my friend's lunch invitation.
I was kinda disappointed that Chris went to Abel just because he thought NC was getting too crowded. I thought people were backstabbing him or that a friend of his died in a horrible manner due to NC's incompetent governing. Should have known that Chris would be more pragmatic than that.
I don't have too much to say about this story. I wonder what Chris's research has to say.
Zombies Run S3M16 Battle Born
I did this run on Feb 21. I wasn't really running, though. I was taking a few visitors on a fast walk to Lincoln Memorial. Yeah, let's just say that's what I did. I ran, they walked.
Spoilers beyond this point:

So this is the origin story of OG Runner 10, Chris McShell, the most productive zombie-destroyer at Abel. I don't know why or how he ended up at Abel from New Canton, but we'll find out in the next missions. The story ends as we are trapped in a barn with a bunch of soon-to-be zombies. Sam ended the story abruptly while he excused himself to go to the bathroom. Thank you for keeping me hanging, Sam.
I do like Chris and was really saddened when he died. I hope we get more stories about him.
ZRS3M15
I ran this on February 16, before I got sick.
Spoilers ahead.

I was excited about meeting Veronica at first, but upon meeting her on this mission, I am not too sure I like her. She seemed too busy and preoccupied with her research.
Guess I can't judge a grieving teen. They deal with pain in their own way.
I am so done with these stupid zombie cult people.
Happy father’s day to Sam Yao and Chris Mcshell
edit: AND TO ED oh my god my sweet Ed i am SO SO SORRY
I just ran the Chris McShell mission of Zombies Run season 1 and I have so many feelings about him.
We all process trauma and grief differently. Some of us make radio shows. Some of us snip and prickle at everyone around us. Some of us do math.
When Chris said that his story was no worse than others "statistically speaking", my heart broke. Because this kind, soft-spoken analyst was trying to fit his immense loss into the logic and rules of statistics. He was trying to find comfort in the order. And you could *hear* him falling short. Unable to quantify his grief.
But there's something really beautiful about Chris using math to cope. Because it's familiar to him. It's a comfort. But more than that, it's a way to help. If his math and his theories aren't being applied to help the people, he doesn't want to stick around. He *hates* bloodshed and suffering. He left New Canton bc of it. He doesn't even like talking about putting down the undead. But you can hear his voice warm up when he has a way to help people. When he can save people.
He's still holding out hope that his little girl is alive, even though he *literally* knows the chances.
He's a school teacher. His purpose before the world ended was to help people and to teach people. His purpose after the world ended was to help people and teach people.
He's a logician but he's also so, so soft.
