Reposted from @gospelforenneagram Jesus entered a village and was welcomed into the house of Martha. Similar to a caring and nurturing Type Two, Martha did everything she could to make Jesus feel comfortable and prepare a meal he wouldn’t forget. In first-century Israel, where people were judged by their hospitality, Martha would no doubt receive a raving review. Unconsciously, she might has seen this as an opportunity to feel needed by Jesus. Twos, who think about relationships a lot, can sever their connection with others by trying too hard to help. In the story, while Martha’s sister Mary was sitting at Jesus’s feet connecting with him, she became “distracted by all the preparations that had to be made” (Luke 10:40). Furthermore, another need that Twos have is to be acknowledged and appreciated for their contributions. They want to be wanted. They also want others to notice their needs so they don’t have to ask. Therefore, as Jesus sat talking with Mary, seemingly oblivious to all that Martha was doing, it led to any angry outburst: “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” When Twos feel unsupported or think others are taking advantage of their help, they get resentful and become confrontational (like an unhealthy Eight). Twos are amazing friends and supporters. After all, it was Martha that opened up her home to Jesus, not Mary! But all Twos must come to Jesus in humility, along with their neediness, looking to Jesus to serve them—not the other way around. When Peter said, “You shall never wash my feet,” Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me” (John 13:8). While Martha displayed a “giving to get” mentality, Jesus gently points out the futility of living like this. He says, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary” (Luke 10:41-42). Jesus invites Twos to relax their compulsion to be The Helper for everyone (a.k.a. The Holy Spirit) and instead find rest at his feet. #enneagram #enneagram2 #enneagram2w3 #christianenneagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CWd3LDrLyL_shZ8kihcwioqJWjg3pUZth4w30U0/?utm_medium=tumblr
