Today’s Podcast Highlights

Oh man my podcast playlist was amazing today!

Number one top moment (like I laughed out loud with delight) was Renee confessing she didn’t make the cheerleading team in high school because she was “too perky” on ep. 86 of “Can I Pet Your Dog?” If you’re a CIPYD listener (if not, why h*ckin not?!) you will already know that Renee’s perkiness level is always 12/10. Which you’d think would be desirable for cheerleaders. I’m going to assume now that the people already on the squad were too worried about Renee showing them up to let her cheer!

Second (in terms of this list, not necessarily in amount of enjoyment!) great moment was being reminded of how great romance novels are thanks to Emily & Lisa interviewing Jackie Kashian (”Baby Geniuses”).

Third (but in no way last!) is the entirety of “The Beef & Dairy Network” episode (#21, the Church of Eli). A little weird, a little uncomfortable, a lot funny!

All of which are on the Maximum Fun network. It’s MaxFun Drive time and they are KILLING IT!!! So if you don’t listen to any MaxFun shows, what are you doing? And if you do and can afford to kick them a couple bucks a month, it is 100% worth every penny (and more) you can spare!!

This water monster is awesome and I’m so excited to get into a longer arc; I’m already highkey invested in Aubrey and Duck and I’m sure Ned will grow on me (Merle certainly did)

Really happy this show is back, I forgot how much I loved its creepy mood and Jasika Nicole’s unreal voice

I really really love all the representation - of sexuality, mental illness, struggles with addiction, survivor abuse, and so much more, and all of them feel so real and dealt with so honestly, and all in the context of a cool superpowers story

This is a really powerful podcast; they do such an extraordinary job with all of their interviews and creating the soundscape and everything, and if anything this season just seems even more in-depth than the last

I really hope the audio will improve in the near future - it’s gotten better, but there’s still episodes where I go in and out of being able to hear them, or one of them will obviously be too far from or too close to the mic.

We moved from 2008 to 2009; I was reminded that The Dark Knight and the first Iron Man came out in the same year, which was bizarre

Was psyched to see hysteria in there, since I actually know a lot about that one!

In general this show continues to be both hilarious and instructive - and make for good stories I can pass on in the right company

Travis and Theresa are sweet, but they’re telling me very little that I don’t know - I wonder if it might actually get better once we get further into the show and we get past some of the more obvious topics

The Thrilling Adventure Hour

Episode #45-#70, out 220 where the podcast ended plus specials

I’ve fallen deeply in love with the Sparks Nevada storyline - I love all of the side characters and the world they’ve constructed.

The new War of the Worlds segment I’m not crazy about - I find it kind of difficult to follow because there’s a weird balance of plot but mostly just fast talking comedy

I’m also rapidly losing patience with the Captain Laserbeam segment, although I found the BatAquaman character hilarious, so if we can get a few more side characters like him to make regular appearances then I’ll enjoy it more

Beyond Belief continues to be a good time and my second favorite segment after Sparks Nevada

I’m really falling in love with Croach and Nevada’s relationship. I don’t think I’m ready to fully articulate WHY it’s so good but there’s always something so compelling about people who are wildly different from one each other and don’t even particularly like each other but also would die for each other... even if they would never admit that.

Also I feel like we got a lot of foreshadowing and hints at backstory this episode???? I don’t really know how much things are going to be used in continuity - like the robot fists being a gift COULD mean something important in the future, or maybe it was just a throwaway joke, and “King of Mars” is either SUPER important or Nevada just pulling something out of his ass. But the Red Plains Rider backstory was new!!!! (I think.) Human raised by Martians? That’s so cool, and explains a lot about her character and her connection with Croach. I’m really hoping we get more about her backstory in the future.

There are parts of this episode that are perhaps, uh, shall we say playfully offensive, but I have to say the line “He took a pistachio in the war” is so much funnier than it has any right to be

I highkey do NOT agree that the witches took Macbeth’s free will, most interpretations are that he is manipulated into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Otherwise the story loses much of its interest. Also are you kidding I love Lady Macbeth.

I love this character though, I love the idea of a teenage boy, which can be such an emotionally repressed demographic, as an empath. That’s such a cool subversion.

So like Caleb and Adam are definitely gay and become boyfriends later right

Also oooooooh hints at backstory, Caleb is in therapy because he got overwhelmed with anger and hit somebody. I don’t know if this podcast would do this yet, but I’m hoping maybe for a flashback episode where we get his first session? It’s an interesting choice to have both Sam and Chloe be just starting but start Caleb at Session 9
