This cactus is insane! They live to be over 200 years old and are immensely tall, like giants towering over the desert. Saguaro cacti only live in the Sonoran desert and are a protected keystone species. It’s illegal to touch them. And they’re a cactus so maybe it’s a good idea not to touch them! A couple weeks ago I had the honor of joining an incredible group of folks in San Francisco for the 2030 Collaborators Dinner at the Civana House and the Planet Home conference thanks to my dear brother Lucian Tarnowski. . I began this painting as a commemorative reminder of this gathering that culminated at the Palace of Fine Arts under the full moon. . We are all playing a part of the unfolding of our collective future, whether we realize it or not. And it is incredibly energizing to convene with others taking action in their respective fields to share story and build relationships. . It seems so daunting how many shifts need to take place to restore harmonic relationship with the human species and the earth. The flag of optimism can be hard to carry, though when I think of my little nephew and niece and all of the children, I feel more inspired and excited for this great healing and remembering that is happening and ahead of us. . One of oldest living beings on the planet lives in the Sonoran and Mojave desert. Do you have any idea what it is? It’s called the creosote bush. It isn’t the cactus behind me but we saw it on the amazing hikes we went on. The oldest one alive today is 12,000 years old. It has a beautiful fragrance that gets released when it rains. And it can live without water for up to 2 years. Native American trips used the plant for all sorts medicinal purposes. Have you ever seen it? And…. Which one do you prefer? 1 or 2.
