How about Superman?
there we go. there we go.
i've been screaming non stop about this show and next episode is THE episode. it's the romance. a fully realized black character. a fully realized woman. gets to drive this story AND be the one in a billion love interest of this series' superman. i don't want the show to end. i don't want to have to go back to desexed mammies and hypersexed jezebels after this season is over.
Everything you said… AND the fact that they made both the first super-hero period and the most powerful, black men, is a statement as well. The fact that the entire show revolves around a black woman who is herself a major superhero as well…I also caught that beautiful nod to the fact that Superman was created by Jewish comicbook writers (Moore himself is also Jewish) in the inclusion of that bio for Dr. Manhattan in the show’s narrative…It matters because yeah, it means a lot to me when I see oppressed folks being a part of that philosophy I’d like to think I try to stick with, too… “I hope we all make it.” It matters that Trieu is Vietnamese and that Angela grew up in Vietnam and speaks the language. It matters that we got to see this black couple be loving with one another.I’ve seen people quibble about this; the too typically uncomfortable with race set, making jokes about “blackface”, but Dr. Manhattan literally, isn’t a human being anymore. He’s the embodiment of that whole “We don’t really disappear because we’re made of star stuff.” He’s reconfigured/recycled matter. He’s not a person. He’s a “god” whose passive omniscience is why he left. WATCHMEN, as usual redid all the familiar heroes with added critiques. Manhattan is this slant-world’s Superman, but he is far more powerful, so much so, that our human concerns are beneath him, not in a smug “I’m superior” way, but genuinely, his different form and abilities render that a truth… So yeah, that this entity who has no concept of time, or arguably humanity anymore settled down, gave up all of that to love a black woman and their children as a stay-at-home black dad… Is a lot.It matters that every black woman aside from Regina King wasn’t cast as racially ambiguous, but decidedly dark-skinned black women. It matters that the narrative solidly and smartly condemns white supremacy, while including nuanced critique about the messiness of doing the “right” thing (i.e. that bit I mentioned about what Officer Jen saw in Angela as a child –willingness to listen with impassivity to an execution w/o trial– which she knew would make her a good cop). It matters that the ultimate evil here is wealth. Trieu, Ozymandias, AND the 7thK/Cyclops ALL have it. The powerful few all determining what they think is best for society and implementing it.This contained in this weird but familiar slant-earth is just everything I like to chew on in good genre.

#Wow! I wish I could pull off all black. What happened in that book? Was it a bad one?
i think anyone can pull it off. you just gotta want it. and as for the book- anyone who reads it will go blind upon completion.

Puzzle rings?
They look like this, they can all kind of unwind from each other into a chain of rings and then stack back together! Got these the other day, they’re really neat. Incredibly tricky though.
👀 What are your New Year's resolutions?
I didn't actually make any. But if I had ... mostly I'd just like to find a more stable living situation, and that seems a bit mundane for a resolution, though I am making progress. Help more people, maybe. Make some real friends.
