CLARA NOVA x Freedom Fry - Matchstick

Certainly prolific songwriters, Franco-American duo Freedom Fry certainly have the liberty of releasing a lot of quality music. With eight singles and EPs under their belt for 2019, Freedom Fry’s penultimate record however is a collaborative effort. Channeling Clara Nova for their partnership on single and EP “Matchstick”, Freedom Fry form a dream-laden atmosphere constructed through the resonance of distant guitars and a nostalgic beckon of vocals. Fluttering between lofty impermanent of its ephemeral textures and its infinite sustain, their latest dream pop number is a change of pace from the rustic charm of their more acoustic numbers. 

Freedom Fry is not one to sit idly. Check out some of their recent works including the folksy warmth and howling country romantics of “1983″; the beachy warmth of “The Summer” and their tribute to the Starman with the bassy of “David Bowie” alongside “Matchstick”. Enigmatic French-American alt-pop musician and visual artist, CLARA-NOVA (the new moniker for Sydney Wayser) will be releasing her EP, ‘The Iron Age’, in March. The upcoming project was in collaboration with producer Shawn Everett (Julian Casablancas, Alabama Shakes, John Legend) to help expand Wayser’s sound and explore new sonic elements for the EP. Over the span of her career, Wayser has amassed millions of streams on Spotify, and garnered press praise with NPR, ELLE, Interview Magazine, KEXP, Nylon, and more, plus performed on national TV for Last Call with Carson Daly. Her music has been featured within numerous major films and network TV series such as: Spotlight, Wish Upon, Shameless, How to Get Away with Murder, This Is Us, Fear Inc. Exodus: Gods and Kings and more. TSH: Talk us the through what the current stage of CLARA-NOVA signifies to you...

CLARA-NOVA: Well, I’ve been hard at work for my forthcoming full-length. A lot of the songs coming out on this record are from my own perspective and telling my own story, but I’m still trying to find a way to make my music bigger than just me. I feel that even though a song is written by the artist, it is eventually heard through other ears and I want listeners to apply their own meanings. I’m also aiming to combine a visual component to accompany my music too. I’ve been working on visual installations and collaborating with a bunch of local photographers. This side of things is touching more on the social climate and what’s going on in the world. I can’t wait to share it in due time.

TSH: You’ve had to endure quite a few obstacles to finally be able to release your EP ‘The Iron Age’...

CLARA-NOVA: Yeah, I was signed to a label that folded and took all of my music. I had to re-record everything to get it out. For me, ‘The Iron Age’ seeing the light of day feels like a reminder of strength and perseverance. This body of work signifies me overcoming a big hurdle and choosing to not stop.

TSH: In a sense this body of work is in some ways a chapter of loss, however, you’ve come through the other end feeling liberated...

CLARA-NOVA: Yeah, it feels really good to have music coming out now. The last couple of years were on somewhat of a hold whilst I had to re-record and write new music. However, it’s all coming together now and I couldn’t be happier. I feel like I’m back in my natural element and I have this pleasing rhythm to writing music again. It just feels great to be in the midst of the music making process again after a temporary interruption.

TSH: Shawn Everett has worked with the likes of Julian Casablancas and Alabama Shakes. You had him on board to nurture the sound of your music too...

CLARA-NOVA: Shawn is one of the most brilliant individuals I have ever worked with. My record feels like a complete collaboration with Shawn. I could not have made this record without him. It’s funny because he is truly the opposite of myself. Shawn’s hands move faster than anything I’ve ever seen in ProTools, haha! He can dial up a range of ideas so quickly!

TSH: Do you still form much of your music via experimenting with synths, as well as live looping?

CLARA-NOVA: It’s a mix nowadays. I feel like sometimes I have a very strong idea of what I’m aiming for and other times it’s more a case of making the shape of a song and then going into the studio and experimenting. Once I plant the initial ideas, the music seems to fall into place very organically.

TSH: How do you normally settle on your vocal stance for songs?

CLARA-NOVA: A lot of the times I’ll have voice notes on my phone that I turn to. Also, I really do enjoy layering my vocals. When I’m in the studio I often just go with what feels good with my vocal direction. If I can feel it in my body, I know I’m going in the right direction.

TSH: What was the process like in fleshing out ‘THE ILLUSIONIST’?

CLARA-NOVA: If I recall correctly, I think I wrote that song in an afternoon. I was sort of throwing ideas around about this sense of floating, the idea of illusion and the world being a bigger thing than we are. For that song I was also inspired Yayoi Kusama’s artwork ‘Infinity Mirrors’. But yeah, I just remember going home, picking up a guitar and the song coming about very quickly. The song felt a bit like it had Joni Mitchell type of chord changes in it, even though I wasn’t listening to her at the time of making it, but it reminded me of her work. I guess there must have been a deep pool somewhere in my subconscious that remembered listening to a bunch of Joni Mitchell records.

TSH: Does ‘This Side of Paradise’ carry a more sombre tone?

CLARA-NOVA: That song is about heartbreak, ha! Even when I play it live I’m transported back to certain memories and moments. I guess that’s the beauty of music! The song is sort of about a specific moment of knowing that it’s over and accepting that someone is broken and that you cannot fix them. Sometimes you have to accept that it’s not your fault when things don’t go accordingly in relationships.

TSH: How cool has it been to have had your music featured on top TV shows like How to Get Away With Murder and Shameless?

CLARA-NOVA: Yeah, it’s really cool and it feels very rewarding. I’m a very visual person; therefore I learn and soak up a lot from film and television. It’s really nice when picture and music work well and effectively together. Oh, and I’m a big fan of William H. Macy, so to have my music in Shameless felt extra special, ha!

TSH: Where do you opt to go when you want to escape the madness in the world?

CLARA-NOVA: I go to creative places to escape the bedlam. Going to the museum is especially healing. To be able to tap into some of the great minds all in one room and to get an insight into different time periods is really fascinating. I mean America can be so overwhelming, especially reading the news every day, so it’s nice to get away from the negativity. It can be tough listening to the country’s leader talking about values that I do not agree with - it can often feel traumatic and toxic. To escape it all going to the museum allows me to enter a different world momentarily. I get to reflect and allow myself to broaden my horizons, which is often a welcome respite.

TSH: You also like to fall back on words of wisdom from the likes of the Dalai Lama and Yoko Ono...

CLARA-NOVA: Oh, definitely. We need more voices like those two. Everything is so fast paced and it kind of feels like there is a lack of accountability these days. It’s nice when the voices of the likes of the Dalai Lama and Yoko Ono can spread good vibes and put things into perspective in a positive way.

TSH: Being a fan of The National, did you appreciate their latest record?

CLARA-NOVA: I love their latest record so much! I was actually driving about 6 hours over the holidays to visit my grandma and I had it on repeat the whole time, ha! ‘Trouble Will Find Me’ is also such a stunning album too. I’m constantly amazed with how consistent they are with each passing record.

TSH: CLARA-NOVA defines being strong and focussed. Now that you have a newfound sense of clarity, how do you feel about future plans?

CLARA-NOVA: For me, this project is a new chapter for me. I feel like I have a new voice and a newfound sense of confidence. When I was releasing music under my own name, I felt like I had to fit into a certain box, and now just in changing the name I’ve given myself some flexibility. I feel like CLARA-NOVA is kind of like being a new world messenger or something. I’m continuously looking forward and trying to change for the better. Looking ahead, I hope I can be a voice and a light for people who need some kind of reassurance.
