Tiger Tuesday: The cover of the Sophomore Reception dance card from the College of New Jersey (Princeton; often colloquially referred to as it is here as “Princeton College” until taking the name “Princeton University” in 1896), 1892. Sophomores gave a reception to the outgoing senior class (hence ‘94 to ‘92--this was a reception given for the Class of 1892 by the Class of 1894). The Princetonian referred to that year’s reception as “a great social, if not a financial success.”

It used to be a common tradition for Princeton sophomores to haze incoming students. This poster, put up by members of the Class of 1892 in 1889, directed the Class of 1893 to observe a variety of rules, including what may strike modern readers as strange: Frosh were forbidden to wear orange and black or decorate their dorm rooms with the colors:
“WHEREAS, Your greenness and your chubby pink and white cheeks can have no connection with the sacred orange and black,we forbid the exhibition of it in any shape and form, either upon your loathsome frame or within your filthy dens.”

Frederick Brokaw was between his junior and senior years at Princeton when he died trying to save three women caught in a rip current from drowning at the Jersey Shore. He only managed to rescue one of them. He was 22 years old. His father donated the funding for Brokaw Memorial on campus in his memory.
