Before I begin, I think that I should link to this video. It is a very engaging piece by Dr. Michael Kimmel and it was how we opened our discussion in class today.

I've been seeing a lot of posts and discussions about how celebrities are criticized for speaking up for people; how this criticism stems from the fact or the idea that these celebrities do not have these shared experiences and that their voice is somehow less legitimate than the voices of those who have had these experiences. Personally, I think that this is just ridiculous. Do I think that they might not understand completely because they come from a privileged background? Certainly. I do not, however, think that what they are saying and doing, or trying to do, should be criticized. One of my peers mentioned Andrea Gibson; she is a queer feminist that has been speaking about her experiences for years now. Let that sink in. However, because she is a women and because she speaks for feminism, her experiences are somehow diminished and taken lightly. Dr Kimmel talks about how he is the cultural norm, which means that when he speaks, his words somehow have more weight than they would if his female colleague had given the lecture. 

We complain that we want the underprivileged to speak for themselves. I suggest that we listen to the underprivileged because are already speaking for themselves. I suggest that we do not criticize Macklemore and Lady Gaga for trying to stand up for everyone that we choose to ignore.

Feminism means accountability for all good and all bad as people rather than male or female. Admitting a woman can do everything a man can do is necessary for men to not feel ashamed to be victims of women.
