Helene P. Foley, Ritual Irony: Poetry and Sacrifice in Euripides, "Chapter 5: The Bacchae"
pre-emptive wip wednesday
Jisel’s stomach sank, both at their reply and at the fact that it was spoken aloud. Until they reached the rank of imperator, all members of the Socorán held a vow of silence, which meant this guard had to be from the Prinasir. She knew little about the city guard—that they protected Ancelm city and palace rather than being sworn to any specific house—and could only guess what she’d done to earn their commander’s mistrust. “And what is it your commander has asked you to guard against?” she queried. “Abast asher running amuck?” The guard didn’t wince, but they did give a slightly pained incline of their head in concession. Jisel watched with little satisfaction. All those years ago, when Callebero had so fiercely and publicly rebuked Fylin for calling her as such, Jisel had asked what the term meant, and Callebero had fumblingly glossed over it as a rude term for foreigners. It was only fair, Jisel mused ruefully, since he had once asked her what ‘bloodletter’ meant and she had struggled similarly in her efforts not to tell her new patron and fledgling friend that her entire family compared his family to monstrous demons that crawled out from under the sea to rape and slaughter innocents.

I don’t think I was even in middle school the first time I saw this with some friends, and when I say we laughed… ofc that was followed by a year of randomly shouting, “Try it now!” whenever things were a bit too quiet; or saying, “It’s probably the Thompson kid” whenever something wasn’t working quite right, or asking, “Was it one of the Thompson brats?” whenever one of us showed up looking like we got our ass kicked. We cracked ourselves up. Good times. This was a great show and I had forgotten all about it.
