The Classic Patty Melt is a tasty and comforting sandwich made with rye bread, Swiss cheese, and caramelized onions. The beef patty is juicy, and the onions are sweet. A classic dish that brings back memories and is great for a hearty meal.
Ingredients: 1/2 lb ground beef. 2 slices of rye bread. 2 slices of Swiss cheese. 1/2 onion, thinly sliced. 2 tbsp butter. Salt and pepper to taste. Thousand Island dressing optional.
Instructions: Preheat a skillet over medium-high heat. Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, then shape it into a patty. Cook the patty in the skillet for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until it reaches your desired level of doneness. Remove from skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of butter and saut the thinly sliced onions until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, in the skillet. Top it with a slice of Swiss cheese, the cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Finally, place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side up. Cook the sandwich over medium heat until the bread is toasted and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes on each side. Remove from the skillet and let it rest for a minute before cutting it in half diagonally. Serve hot with Thousand Island dressing on the side, if desired.
