honestly? people can say whatever they want about the monkees but they were my childhood. i’d sing their music with my family, and they all had such heart and soul. davy was my original crush, and “daydream believer” is tattooed to my heart by now. ever heard “zor and zam?” it’s an anti-war song. not written by them but still, the fact they chose to sing it is amazing. davy was and still is iconic. they entertained people. davy jones’ voice was heaven, especially in that “daydream believer” live japan version. “dream world” represents the modern joke we call politics, and “daydream believer” always makes me feel at peace. good music is eternal. and the monkees were adored by the beatles. the monkees apparently actually outsold the beatles and rolling stones combined in 1966-67. their show was inspired by the beatles’ “hard day’s night” with all the running scenes and such. paul had “yesterday” and davy had “i wanna be free,” which is a beautiful anthem as well. john lennon said the monkees were, “the funniest comedy team since the marx brothers” and that he “never missed an episode.” george said, “when they get it all sorted out, they might turn out to be the best.” mike nesmith and john lennon were friends. micky and paul were friends. and, popularity doesn’t determine quality of music at all. i sincerely wish the monkees had more credit than they do. the group was honestly fabulous. bonus; listen to “girl” by davy jones and “girl” by the monkees. please, don’t hate on the monkees for the angle they were set on. their music, friendship, and mark on the is forever timeless.
