Hiatus Announcement

To all my wonderful followers,

You may have noticed that I’ve been quiet lately. This last month has been rough but these last few days, in particular, have really thrown me into the deep. 

Over the weekend my father-in-law passed away after a 6-month battle with illness. He was finally diagnosed three and a half weeks ago with myeloma amyloidosis, and although he began treatment straight away, his body could simply not take any more. He entered palliative care on Friday. We looked forward to spending as much time as possible over the next week or fortnight with him, but not even 15 hours later he passed peacefully in his sleep early Saturday morning with myself and my fiance at his side. 

Commencing officially on the 16th of this month, I’ve elected to take a 6-month leave of absence from my candidature so that I can be there to support my fiance’s family through this time. I will also be going on hiatus from regular posting on both this main blog and my personal blog, @sassy-cicero-says, for a period of at least one month. As many of you know, I run this blog alone, and I simply do not have the energy to keep up with the day to day posting at this time. My inbox and submission box will remain open and I will check them regularly in case any of you would like to submit posts and I will post when I am able - I love the Classics community dearly and want to keep up with all the wonderful people/finds/research.

Before my storm-induced Rendell marathon, I’d been reading the wrong way. John Gardner, the literary critic, wrote that the job of the novelist is to create a “vivid and continuous dream” for the reader, but I’d somehow developed a case of readerly sleep apnea. I’d gotten into the habit of consuming novels so fitfully that I was all but sealed off from their pleasures. hi, my name is millie. i’m a second year university student in the south-east of england! i decided to make this account because i already enjoy running my bookstagram, but pretty stationary and study set-ups make me all warm and fuzzy inside! i also think it will keep me motivated throughout the rest of my second year, especially during dissertation planning and workshops! 

i’ve wanted to make a studyblr for a while, but was too scared to actually go ahead and make one... until now!

what i study

i’m a classics student, which is basically ancient languages, ancient literature, and ancient history. i absolutely adore it and have always been interested in the ancient world. i am probably leaning more towards ancient greek at the moment, but i love ancient rome and the ancient near east as well. i have particular interests in macedon, northern greece, roman satire and lyric poetry, ancient legislation, and the study of papyri.  

extracurriculars?

i shoot for my university archery team.

i’m part of the classics society.

i’m also part of the museum society. 

i’m a PAL leader (peer-assisted learning) for greek history.

and finally, i’m also a student ambassador for my university.

my career

i currently work as part of the front of house team at a small museum near my university, i’m also an events volunteer at a larger national museum. 

i want to pursue a career in archaeological artefacts conservation. this is basically looking after museum or archaeological collections and ensuring that these invaluable pieces of history don’t get ruined/broken/destroyed from natural processes, etc. to do this, i will have to study for a masters degree on a specialised course after i graduate. though, i’m also interested in research.

That's right, you read that last one correctly. You see, I was telling coepit about my plans for a classics blog, and he asked me "What are you going to do to differentiate your blog from the others?" Gay fanfiction was the first thing that came to mind. So, as of right now, I (meaning clear-eyed-athena me) is the classics fandom's official producer of Zeus/Apollo fics and so on. I even take requests! If all my classics homies out there could pass this on to their followers and various other classics homies, that would be superb. I look forward to seeing all of you! 

And don't worry, I'll still classics on this blog occasionally, but for the most part that stuff will be sent to C-E-A.
