Prompt Two
On my second year placement, where I worked with prep students there was a big focus on classroom displays and visuals for just about anything you could imagine. The displays ranged from classroom rules, literacy and numeracy skills, student charts and the days timetable. On this placement, with guidance from my mentor teacher I made a poster that outlined speaking and listening skills suitable for the preps to understand and put into practice. It contained a diagram with a visual for students to easily refer to.
And the following is a poster I designed revolving around the skill of prediction
Week 4 Reflection:
Classroom Displays-
Having a classroom displays is a great way fro students to learn about different learning topics.
Good Content to have within the classroom for students to continue their learning would be having a topic called “Around the world”. This will allow students to see where their class mates background are from and to also learn the food delicacies and their languages.
Prompt Two
1. For placement, I made many displays for the classroom to do with literacy. The displays consisted of different words to use for ‘angry,’ ‘sad’ and ‘said’ to improve their writing. These were used multiple times by many students during writing lessons and many students also came and told me they were picking up many different descriptive words in the books they were reading. The importance of classroom displays is essential and also strengthens confidence in students abilities, especially when displays of their work is shown.
2. The poster displayed ^^^ is focusing on phonemes, in particular, the S sound in words using s, se, ss, ce, x, c. As a class, brainstorming words with these letters that make the same sound was done. The class then chose 15 words they believed were the most interesting and we wrote them on the poster as a reminder that these letters can all make one sound.
WEEK FOUR REFLECTION.
During my most professional experience round, I was in a classroom with year 6-8 students. Unfortunately, whilst I was completing my professional experience round, the teacher had recently taken down the classroom display in their room, as she was going to create a new display from the learning experiences undertaken in their Social and Emotional Learning lesson. This display, once completed, would consist of the hands of each student, with each hand containing the strengths and talents of each student. The talent could be a simple as being a good friend, and the hand of each student would be on display, thus demonstrating an inclusive approach to teaching and learning.
A display I have observed previously, in a foundation-year 2 classroom, has been a “PIE” diagram for the purposes of writing; to Persuade, Inform, and Entertain. This display had a diagram of a pie (supporting the visual learners and foundation level students), with the word accompanying the diagram, as well as a definition and examples of texts for each purpose. Although it was made reference to during the learning experiences in writing, it was also frequently referred to during reading, as students were encouraged to consider and record the purpose of the text they were reading during independent reading, and to justify their response, making references to the text.
I found this display to be very useful, as students were consistently making reference to it during reading and writing lessons, symbolising the correlation between reading and writing during literacy learning, a concept that has been emphasised throughout this unit. The display was also effective in providing students with a mnemonic device to remember the purposes of writing/texts, as well as having a visual diagram that is reflected in their prior knowledge to further strengthen their understanding regarding the purposes of writing.
ECL310 Week 4 Classroom Displays
Throughout my school placements I have witnessed some really impressive classroom displays. Overall I think the ones that stood out to me the most were the more original creations some of the students had come up with on their own. The displays with the most unusual shapes, colours, writing, theme always grabbed my attention the most. I think when it comes to creating classroom displays there’s always going to be the usual, birthdays display for example, however I think the more impressive showcases are the ones which express each child’s interests or hobbies. This is where the children really thrive, in areas which they love, where they are free to express themselves and their interests without judgement. I think this is incredibly important, to establish such creative expression, especially in the younger years, as it helps give them a sense of identity and allows each child to be an individual and encourages them to celebrate and appreciate difference. Such a concept will go a long way in guiding a more supportive environment and shaping more inclusive and respectful young people.
This is a work-in-progress display that I helped implement on teaching rounds. It was based on an inquiry unit on health and involved students researching online to create a list of super foods. They then chose a super food and researched it further using the 5Ws and 1H. Students then used their chosen super food to create a 'Super food Hero' and used speech bubbles to introduce their hero and explain why they were super. The display is a great visual aid for students to assist them in their learning as they can go back and look at what they learnt - plus learn more through what other students learnt. It also takes a multimodal approach by incorporating the use of creativity, technology and literacy.
ECL310 Prompt 4: Classroom Displays
During my practicum this round, I have come to realise this display in every classroom is very important to the teachers and students. It is called the VCOP Triangles. They are mostly used for literacy writing pieces as well as anything else the children want to write, each triangle incorporates a skill the children should be getting familiar with whilst writing their piece of writing such as an informative report. V- Vocabulary C- Connectives O- Sentence Openers P - Punctuation
These 4 triangles are always mentioned whilst teaching a new writing skill or style and as of this week the teachers at my placement school have had a PD session on ways they could implement VCOP within their plans as a 5 minute warm up activity rather then just having the posters up on display. They will focus on one VCOP triangle each day of the week then recap what the children have used on day 5.
This will further develop the children’s knowledge of learning new words, Adding correct punctuation, using different sentence openers rather than one all the time and knowing how to connect one sentence to another using the correct terms.
