WHAT IS CURRENTLY HAPPENING IN THE PHILIPPINES

Philippines is currently suffering from climate crisis. Last November 12, Typhoon Ulysses (also known as Typhoon Vamco internationally) lashed on the northern part of the Philippines. It is the 8th typhoon in 2 months causing massive to struck the entirety of Luzon in the midst of pandemic. This morning, some provinces are already submerged. Hundreds of people are dead, some are still missing and thousand families lost their homes and livelihood. No food to eat, no clothes to wear.

Philippines is in dire need of help right now. A dollar or a euro will go a LONG away to help the victims. $1 USD = 50 PHP, and with 50 PHP you can buy at least a bottle of water and 3 eggs.

My name is Farista Sairuv and I owe a deep amount to the nature of Turtle Island. Through various emotional and spiritual breakdowns nature held me, healed me, and taught me.

But the nature that saved me is in danger itself. From multiple, many-layered threats, the worst of which is climate change. And when nature is in danger, the people are in danger.

In the past year climate-fuelled storms have flooded innumerable villages in my home country of Bangladesh, destroyed crops, and caused millions to flee their homes. Smoke from climate-fuelled forest fires gave my little brother a life-threatening asthma attack. Droughts have been hitting the Horn of Africa about every second year. In 2020 a swarm of locusts ravaged crops in India. A year prior to that a landslide in Africa caused a man to lose his family. And we all remember how the loosening polar vortex left families in Texas without heat or water.

This does not need to happen. We can and must reshape our lives and societies to work in harmony alongside nature instead of against it. The technology and ability to stop the climate crisis in its tracks exist. All that’s missing is the will.
