Clockwork Aquario

Clockwork Aquario was the final arcade game developed by Westone, the folks behind the Wonder Boy / Monster World games. Originally developed in 1992 and 1993 for the Sega System 18 arcade board, the game failed location tests and was canceled before release, resulting in the game lying in the company’s archives for a few decades. Thankfully, publisher ININ Games stepped in to fund a restoration project, allowing for the world of Aquario to shin after a long slumber.

Westone's lost arcade game Clockwork Aquario is about to release 27 years later!

After 27 years Westone's final and now finished arcade game is about to release on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. If you are a 90s arcade fan like ourselves here at Randomised Gaming this is a dream come true.

Developed by Westone, who were famous for the Wonder Boy / Monster World series of game. Clockwork Aquario was originally planned to be released in 1994 having started concept back in 1991, but the release was sadly cancelled. The game was designed by Ryuichi Nishizawa and one look at it will send you back in time to the 90s!

Huge bright, bold and colourful 2D sprites that reflect the talent of Westone at the time. It's reminds us a lot of Monster World IV which Westone did on the Mega Drive that same year. Every screenshot of this game really is a joy to look at!

Strictly Limited Games have done the retail release and you can still preorder some versions on there website. While ININ Games will be doing the digital release. From November 30th, 2021 in Europe, followed shortly by the North America version on December 14th, 2021!

ININ Games will release Clockwork Aquario for Xbox One and PC via Steam this summer, the publisher announced.

Clockwork Aquario first launched for Playstation 4 and Switch on November 30, 2021 in Europe and December 14 in North America.

The long thought lost arcade treasure by the legendary Westone team is finally being brought to light after 30 years! In cooperation with Strictly Limited games, the unfinished ROM has been dug up and finished with the input of the original developers. The beautiful pixel art was at the top of its class at the time and has lost nothing of its charm over the years.

Jump and run through a colorful fantasy world, pick up and throw your enemies, hit multiple at the same time to get a multiplier and rack up your high score! You can also play with up to two friends, will you collaborate to take down Dr. Hangyo or try to sabotage each other to get the high score?

Westone’s Lost and Last Arcade Game Rescued from History’s Dumpster

There’s not a lot of info available on the Clockwork Aquario gameplay beyond it being an arcade platformer, and the screenshots clearly showing two-player simultaneous play, but its pedigree is more than enough to put this on a Most Anticipated list.
