Okay but picture this: Once J’onn agreed to give up the kryptonite, Clark decides to ask Lois how she feels about polyamory. (She’s unsure at first but then she meets J’onn and is very much on board.)

*bad blood by taylor swift starts to play in the background*
I've been torturing @spartanlady16 with angst about Clark and J'onn having met before he took over Hank Henshaw's life, when he first tried to be Martian Manhunter. Clark kind of fell in love a bit, watching him be a hero, but then J'onn got fed up with the fear. So he ran away, and Clark understood, but it still hurt. Then Dr. Danvers and Hank Henshaw went after him. Henshaw came back, without J'onn, without Dr. Danvers, and Clark loses his mind. He storms into the DEO headquarters demanding answers, "Hank" screams back, pulling him away from prying eyes before transforming into J'onn. "Why are you doing this?" "I have to." "I can get you out of here." "No, I need to stay here. I promised Dr. Danvers I'd look after his daughters. After your cousin."
Imagine the look on Clark’s face when he first realized that J’onn didn’t plan on destroying the kryptonite, when he first realized that his friend was holding onto weapons that could kill him, could kill his newfound cousin. (Though it probably wouldn’t really be the first time, unless Batman doesn’t exist in this world.)
Now imagine the anguish that J’onn felt making this decision, knowing that he might be signing Clark’s or Kara’s death warrants, but also knowing that there was an army of criminal Kryptonians hiding on Earth that needed to be stopped.
Think about the wedge that drove between the two of them, about the heated arguments, each one desperately hoping the other would understand.
