It feels funny to write and think about clothes, seeing as I’ve never really cared about what I wear.
I mean, I grew up wearing a uniform to school every day of my primary education career, which was kind of a relief, because it meant I never as to decide or choose an outfit for the next day. Instead I just put on the same shirt, tie, and pants and headed out.
In short, it was glorious.
However lately I’ve been thinking about the role clothing plays in my life — and not just because I worship at the altar of Tan France (Though he has a lot to do with the fact that I am even making an effort the way I am now). But because I’ve realised that I’m never going to “grow out” of what could be described as a “very masculine of centre” clothing style, so I might as well try and work with it and do my best to elevate it to something more... occasion appropriate?
And honestly, it’s the most freeing (and the most me-ing) thing I’ve ever experienced. Because I didn’t know there was a whole subsection of the world mostly dedicated to gender neutral or androgynous clothing. Or just that I could look up blogs about “tomboy” fashion, which means I can now look my best in a way that is most comfortable to me and the way I want to present myself to the world. The result of which is that I actually care and get excited about clothing now, in a way I never really have before.
And just that tiny bit of a mental shift is enough. Because I may not fully know who I am yet (or how I may choose to identify) but I do know this one, very sure fact about me — and sometimes that bit of little, goes a very long way.
P.S. Whatever they say about organisation giving you a clear mind is correct. I had seven different emotional epiphanies while folding just my socks.
