Collection Highlight: Novels in Verse 

You don’t have to love poetry to enjoy novels in verse. Most are written in free verse, a loose, easy-to-read form that seems more like restructured prose than Shakespeare or Wordsworth. Think of it this way: The author takes a great story and focuses on the guts by cutting out the non-essential stuff and replacing it with white space. This gets you through each page quicker. The format also nullifies print-phobia, the terror that sometimes arises when you’re faced with pages and pages of little black marks. Novels in verse are also highly readable thanks to their conversational style.

Hello Miraculers, ladybugs and black cats alike! My grandpa is remodeling the kitchen so i took the chance to nab this old spice rack so I could better organize my Miraculous Merch collection.

The shelf is a bit worn down but I don't mind as long as I get a shelf for my collection.

The perler bead Chat Noir and Adrien are made by me. I htought they'd be perfect for the shelf.

RPL’s Animation Film Festival

This summer, the Sunday Film series at the Rogers Public Library is featuring the genre of Animation.

The Rogers Public Library Adult DVD/Blu-Ray Collection has always been oriented towards movies and films that are historically or culturally significant, classic films, award winning films, or movies whose popularity has withstood the test of time. The Library focuses on collecting ‘classic films’ since there were always ways to access new releases and blockbuster films.  Because of recent changes in technology and in the retail environment, the Library is now purchasing popular films as soon as they become available.

Collection Highlight: Award Winners

Sometimes, when you come to the Library, you know exactly what you’re looking for.

Sometimes, all you know is that you want something great to read.

At the Rogers Public Library, we’re always ready to help you find your next favorite author!  You can always come to the Information Desk to ask for suggestions; but if you’d rather browse for yourself, why not check out our lists of award-winning fiction?

Fiction awards are usually given for specific genres and can be chosen either by a specially chosen jury, by professional writers of that genre, or by the votes of fans.  Some awards go to only one book each year; some choose in different categories; and some seem to delight in changing up the categories and rules every year!

Here at the Rogers Public Library, we make every effort to obtain award-winning fiction. Sometimes, we cannot offer every title in every format.  If there’s something you’re looking for that you’re not finding – or an award that you think we should also be following – please let us know!

Now that the weather is getting warmer, it's the beginning of gardening season.  While digging in the dirt and getting everything planted is so much fun, I truly enjoy having fresh veggies all summer.  Here is a selection of books that can help you to start and maintain a vegetable garden, as well as books geared toward cooking or preserving fresh, straight-from-the-garden foods.

R.I.P. Adrienne Rich

I was really saddened to learn of Adrienne Rich's death last week.  The work of this brilliant poet, activist and essayist, I believe, shaped me in my most formative years. 

I first encountered her work my freshman year of college, while I was simultaneously taking an Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies class and a Women's Literature class.  She showed up in my literature class first.  We read her poems.  I admired the simplicity of the language, but her words carried weight. 

In my Women's and Gender Studies class, we read Compulsory Heterosexuality and the Lesbian Existence,where she argues that women have the right to define their own identities outside the pressures of societal expectations.  She encourages women to embrace the complexities of their identities and sexualities. 

While her work was considered radical for its time, it was exactly what I needed to hear at that moment in my life.
