Having to explain to an entire class why I don't celebrate thanksgiving was honestly the highlight of my week, and it's only Monday.
Professor: I'd like everybody to write down a weird thanksgiving tradition they have, so we can look at the differences between each other.
Me: *writes down "I don't celebrate thanksgiving"*
Professor: okay I'm seeing some good responses on here - Woah! Who doesn't celebrate thanksgiving?
Me: I don't.
Professor just nods and tries to move on.
Girl: what do you mean you don't celebrate thanksgiving? It's a national holiday! Everyone should celebrate.
Me: well my family doesn't because we're Native American and we find it weird to celebrate the genocide of our ancestors.
Entire class is dead silent for two minutes.
Boy (who has never spoken in class before): shit, Thanksgiving is fucked up.
Professor: yes it is Kevin. Yes it is.

So I’m in bio right now and we are playing the wish you were a millionaire game (yup, my college is full of children) and we have to report our answers to our LA (learning assistant). One group hadn’t come up yet, so he looked at the girl and made the ‘come here’ motion with his pointer finger.
I whispered “He just made her come with one finger” when she walked down. The two guys on either side of me lost it, now we can’t do any actual work!!!

Thoughts while sitting in a college class
How does this professor have a wife when he has no personality? Can I take a mental health day? It's raining outside that's a sure sign that I shouldn't be here. My next class doesn't take attendance. I should just become a stripper. I'll make a hella lot more money than I do now. What day is it again? Did I have homework? Fuck I'm screwed. *walks to my first class* okay I got my exercise limit in. Time to go to bed. I haven't had enough coffee to learn this shit yet. Haven't we already gone over this?
Position Paper
Should social media be used in all (or most) college classrooms?
It seems like with anything that with changes is often meet with an negative reaction. One such as social media being utilizing as a teaching aid in college classrooms. First there's the fact that within the next five years and beyond most of the next generation job have not even been created. According to Pew Research Center nearly 65% of adults use some form of social media. Next social in a college class can increase student collaboration in the classroom and beyond. Also can encourage more participation more between students and faculty. Resources can be shared faster thus speeding up the learning process. I feel that we all can agree that learning from a textbook, a powerpoint presentation or just hearing an instructor literature can fall on deaths ear. Many business have adopted to using social media as a marketing tool and I add very effectively. Today's student will need to know how to be tech savory to keep up in the market place. Let alone if the plans to open his or hers own business. They will need those tech savory tips of the traits.
All NCA Members are encouraged to participate by adding new entries and enhancing existing ones with more complete and accurate information with references. This is an especially exciting initiative for teachers and students who can make updating or creating Wikipedia entries part of coursework. Learn how one professor incorporated NCA's Wikipedia Initiative into her class. Use Wikipedia for writing assignments in your classroom. Your students will ensure communication discipline entries are accurate and complete. Such work can teach students: that even the simplest ideas are hard to communicate to general audiences; the importance of logic, strength of argument, flow and clarity of writing, and citations of the appropriate literature; and the significance of accuracy in scholarly writing.
