CLEANING OLD RECORD PHOTOS OUT OF MY PHONE BINGE: Sort of a U.S. late-80s answer to Siouxsie & the Banshees. One good song, and that gorgeous album cover.

SINGLE FILE:
SHADOWHOUSE
“CONFORMITY”
GONE HOME
SHADOWHOUSE are back with a hard charging new single titled “CONFORMITY.”
The Portland based group, consisting of: Shane McCauley (Vox & Guitar), Dave Berkam (Bass & Guitar), Ashley Gieger (Synths), and Josh Hathaway (Drums) continue their mastery of goth rock, while pulling equally from indie leaning post-punk & arena goth titans alike. “Conformity” is a rangy rocker on the surface, with a chilly epicenter, as evidenced by McCauley’s coolly cooed coda of “ooo ooo conformity.”
Shadowhouse prove they can let loose, as the track builds into its final third, which is awash in synthesizers and vocal howl until ending in an abrupt classic punk rock cutoff. The quartet know their way around a perfect 3 minute gloom laden track, and all it takes is one listen to “Conformity” to see this through...
And be sure to check out Shadowhouse on tour during the following dates:

Found in the attic while digging around for something else: a long-forgotten Feelies poster from my dorm room. Not sure why I saved it all this time but there it is.
While this remix might have that 80s industrial look to it, the record most certainly isn’t, ‘cause there’s limits to what you can do with a three-chord garage stomp that follows the classic “Louie Louie” formula. That said, “World Shut Your Mouth” is still a honkin’ good song.
Sad to see Mort Drucker, the greatest Mad Magazine artist of all-time IMHO, has passed at 91. I met him a few years ago at NY Comic Con and he kindly signed a 45 sleeve he drew in the 80s for a short-lived Adrian Belew band, The Bears. Belew has already signed it, and I’d figured Drucker would just scrawl across all of them, but instead he carefully fit his signature above Belew’s—so that he wouldn’t cover his artwork.
Matthew Sweet’s early-90s hit, Girlfriend, is more hit-and-miss than people like to admit, but when it connects, it’s wonderful. “I’ve Been Waiting” remains a classic, seemingly effortless piece of folk pop craftsmanship, while “Evangeline” and the title track aren’t afraid to let Robert Quine whip out the electric guitars and get knotty in raucous improvisations. If you dig this album, I heartily recommend it’s unofficial sister album, Lloyd Cole’s self-titled solo debut, made around the same time with most of the same players and production personnel—including Sweet on backing vocals and bass.
