Here's one for those interested in the alternative style, the stoplight loosejaw or rat-trap fish (Malacosteus niger). This species sports the classic black colour scheme of the twilight zone and boasts one of the largest gapes of all fish. What makes this fish special is the pops of colour they incorporate in their wardrobe, including red bioluminescence. As many species in the twilight zone are unable to perceive red light this adaptation allows the fish to illuminate their surroundings without alerting their prey. The stoplight loosejaw is also one of the few animals to make use of chlorophyll, a green pigment commonly used by plants to absorb light energy. This rebellious fish deviates from the from other chlorophyll users however, concentrating a divertive of the chemical around the eyes in order to maximize their red colour vision.

If it makes you feel better, you probably have better colour vision than a mantis shrimp. Mantis shrimp have more types of photoreceptors which pick up on specific colours, but they don't compare adjacent spectra the way humans do and as a result they have less sensitive colour vision.

Yeah absurdly enough that does make me feel better haha. But I would also very much like to combine their increased number of types of cones with our ability to extrapolate and compare visual information though. Ah well I don't know how many lives I'd have to live before humans evolve in that direction though, if they even do that...

Castiel Thinks In Colours..

but just imagine Cas riding in the impala for the first time and feeling comfortable not just in his Human company but for their surrounds because what Cas sees is beautiful: the leather aglow in a soft cosmic blue 

though what he doesnt realise is that his Angel vision is picking up stains long ago wiped clean but still visible under the likes of ultraviolet light and what Cas is seeing is the blood of monsters Sam and Dean hunted and their own wounds gushing and dripping as they sped away from danger 

but also the residue of pleasureful and intimate company in celebration of a case well done when Dean would partake in some quality time with that hot waitress and Sam would retire to the motel for the night 

and its only when an injured Dean is lying unconscious over his lap in the backseat that Cas realises that blood is coloured blue and later when Dean kisses him thankyou and things heat up between them Cas realises that love is also coloured blue

Ok so you know that theory that people couldn’t see the colour blue for some time? Because they didn’t have the language for it or whatever?? I always thought it was total bullshit, but I kept seeing it EVERYWHERE. And I couldn’t come up with a really good counter argument until now.

I’m watching this SciShow video on Egyptian Blue. The first artificial pigment. It spread throughout Mesopotamia and Greece and Rome and....... if they couldn’t see the colour blue, then why were they so desperate to re-create this colour for art, and why was it so popular???

JUST BECAUSE YOU DON’T HAVE A NAME FOR SOMETHING DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN’T SEE IT FUCKHEADS. Fine names for things can help you remember it, but like... fucking... you can still see the thing ffs.
