Re: bed bugs. They! Are! Horrible! Pest control says that I probably only have "a few hitchhikers" so it's not worth it to treat my unit, and told me I should just try finding them myself. How!! I did find one, but I still get bites every few days to a week. I bought some cimexa but I really don't know what to do from here. Pest control in my area is not very helpful apparently.

Hm. Unfortunately they’re probably right, unless you have a full-blown infestation it probably wouldn’t be worth it. Bed bug treatments are involved and pretty expensive. :/ (On the other hand, you live in an apartment building, so I’m surprised they don’t want to deal with it before it gets bad.) Buying cimexa is a good start though! To start, take your sheets off your bed and throw them in a hot wash. While they’re washing, line your mattress with the cimexa in all the cracks and crevices. Get it all in your bedframe as well, and your box spring if you have one. 

If you’re mostly being bitten in bed, you’ll want to buy some interceptor traps on amazon. They’re like 20 bucks. You put them under your bed posts and fill them with baby powder, and probably a little cimexa as well. The walls of the trap are very slippery with the baby powder so they can’t get in or out. Otherwise your bed should be an island! Nothing on or off of it except you, preferably after a hot shower. Your sheets should also never touch the floor, as this will give the bugs a different avenue to your bed.

Jenn and I had to deal with a full-blown infestation basically by ourselves, since the PC person our landlord sent used very outdated techniques and wasn’t particularly helpful. But we got through it and now our place is bug-free. We got a steamer, which is actually the most effective way to get rid of them, but I’m not sure if your situation is bad enough to warrant that purchase. Tbh I wished I lived a little closer so I could go over there myself. I’ve become kind of an ametuer bed-bug exterminator lol, so I could probably find them, or at least find where they’ve been traveling, and steam your mattress and stuff.

The key is to cut them off at the pass. You’re never gonna find their shelter unless you turn your apartment upside-fucking-down, and even if you do they could be hiding in a place you’d never think of or can’t reach. So the best way to deal with them is to catch them on the way to where they bite you, since you are their only source of food. Also try your best to keep the infestation to one room! The difficulty of the problem increases exponentially the more rooms they’re in. Do you have any other questions? :o

What kind of shitshow is your administration, holy hell.

Let’s put this in perspective: this is the administration that doubled down on its faith that our supervillain-esque republican governor would pass a state budget, in spite of his obvious willingness to play chicken with the democratic leader and run the state into the ground. Even as the institutions around it began to collapse under the lack of a budget, my institution held the line that it would be okay, despite acting in ways that were decidedly not okay.

This is also the administration who, in response to a “joke” video that advocated the lynching of its black students, responded with a glorified PR campaign and the announcement of a series of “initiatives” that have yet to come to fruition. That’s not to mention the fact that our institution was recently under investigation by the Office of Civil Rights for its screw ups with numerous sexual assault investigations.

This is also the administration that would much rather blame the racism/sexism/homophobia on its campus on the students, than recognize that it has created the conditions for institutional oppression to flourish through its inaction where reports of institutional oppression are concerned. As an example, at a listening session where the administration was asked why the majority of tenure and tenure track professors were white, an administrator responded with “we only hire the most qualified instructors.”

So yeah, it’s a pretty big shitshow.
