AO3 comment bots are... pretending to be stalkers now???

ok so I've been a holdout on locking my fics to AO3 account access only, since frankly most of the stupid bot comments just make me laugh so it hasn't bothered me enough to restrict access. but what in the actual hell is this one?? "I stood across the street from your house for a while" sure, Jan

for the record, I've been online and in fandom spaces long enough that obviously I have a separate email account for AO3/fandom which is in no way linked to my real name or anything else but are AI bots really trying to creep people into deleting their accounts by pretending to stalk you now???

I got my first nasty AI bot comment on Ao3 the other day. The worst part is it was couched in like, this fake sympathy that parodied actual caring for me and my story. I'm really glad I'd seen it on Tumblr already identified as a bot comment.

So I was wondering what the point of bot comments like that are. Why bother making people feel bad? And the answer that came to me is the same answer that always comes in cases like this.

It's capitalism.

Ao3 is free. People write for free and people can read for free, and they do both in HUGE numbers. All this free entertainment that people do out of love on this massively trafficked site, and it makes corporations CRAZY that they can't make money off it somehow. Corporations have been trying to figure out how to make money off us for years.

So the reason for these nasty comments is probably a couple things:

1. If they can convince writers writing for free to stop writing by making them feel like shit, that's less stories for people to read for free. If there are less free stories, or less stories people want to read, what can they do? Well, corporations hope these readers will turn to AI to make characters to talk to them or to write stories for them.

2. They want to convince writers they suck so they'll stop trying to write on their own and use AI instead. Full stop.

Bottom line is that it's always about money.

AO3 is free and they HATE THAT.

So keep your heads up and keep creating. Do it for love, but if you have to, do that shit out of spite!

Reminder. Bots on Ao3 have gotten more eloquent, but they make the same amount of sense. Not once is any identifying information about my story mentioned. The personal attacks feel like they were learned by the AI from the worst of trolls. Please ignore comments like this:

okay so this is a new type of spambot and I am genuinely confused on what it's purpose is??

like I know there's some trying to hack you and some that scam money out of you and some that try to get you to delete your fic so they can plagiarize

but. but what is this??? what is it for? what is it doing? why are people putting the effort into this? in all my research I have only identified that it's a type of spam, but not what the spammer gets outta doing this

Just got my first comment on my Clexmas fic and it was this😬:

A little bit pissed, I posted a work for a really small fandom a while ago and genuinely didn't ever expect anyone to see it, so I was a bit surprised when I got a comment for it.

So this is blatantly an ai that read the thing, regurgitated an explanation of the plot, and is trying to engagement bait interaction. They didn't even kudos.

Like obviously this isn't nearly as bad as those hate comment bots but it's still really annoying
