Insectember day 18: Hispa atra
Common name: Spiky leaf beetle✨️
Sometime in middle school I wrote a science report on two animals. The kangaroo rat and seaweed seahorse. I wad obsessed by these 2 creatures.
And in college I was convinced that that they were indeed real but no one knew what the hell I was talking about. In addition even the internet made it feel like I created some fever dream Pokemon.
It turned out that during the time I wrote my report and college, the popular common name had switched to "hopping mice" and "leafy seadragon".
I'm happy to say that kangaroo rat is back to kangaroo rat and well...leafy seadragon is such a badass name, so I have nothing to complain about.
Having a common name was cool when my name was always on those personalised kids’ bottles, but now it just means I turn around 100x a week to people calling out to someone else with the same name as me
look!! what i found!!!
