Some cool baby moments from the last few days:
1. Face-washing is very necessary after eating purées, but always a drama. A few days ago, I held OR up to the mirror and said, "look at how dirty your face is! You're dirty here, and here, and here. That's why we have to wash your face! " Bam, first time ever that I've washed their face without fuss!
(The internet says children only pass the mirror test between 18 and 24 months (and OR is 10)... but I wonder if that is actually accurate because passing the mirror test necessitates touching your face, which... well, they'll suck their fingers for comfort or rub their eyes when tired, but they're not consciously touching other parts of their face. And now I wonder how much the mirror test actually measures recognition of self and how much it measures ability to touch one's own face, and whether anyone else has taken that into account and how you would control for it ...)
2. Wiping their nose was also a struggle, but got better when I made a point of explaining when I was blowing/wiping my own nose.
3. They are often very wriggly during diaper changes. I was getting annoyed with the constant rolling over and constantly saying "stay on your back" until I suddenly thought "do they even know what 'stay on your back' means?" So the next time they were still for a moment, I said "what you are doing now is lying on your back. Keep doing that until the diaper is on." And suddenly they were quiet.
4. A few days ago I came home to LG comforting them because they'd fallen while playing at the shoe shelf and bumped their head. They'd already calmed down, but when I took them to the bathroom with me so I could get changed out of my work clothes, they started whining. And as soon as I put them on the floor, they crawled out to the shoe shelf and started bawling, as if to say"this is where it happened! This is where I got hurt!"
