Doctor Who - I was pretty much just "i dunno what to watch" when my library started getting seasons to rent, and I'd vaguely heard of doctor who, and they had Season 1 with chris eccleston, and I loved it, it was a bit campy, but it had the "person standing up for what's right" "regular person discovers how heroic they can be when given the chance" vibes I love, I had to wait awhile but was able to check out season 2, and my library had gotten a few of Old Who, including the very first one, which I also happily enjoyed, as they weren't as horrifically sexist or historically inaccurate as I'd feared, and where actually really well done considering. (special effects are set dressing to me, so long as they aren't blatantly lazy/or used in place of an actual plot) I got through season three with martha, after losing rose, but like the 10th doctor had to grow up a bit and not try to resent a new companion, adored Donna (as is right and just) in old who I had become very attached to the fourth doctor, but enjoyed the others, as I have tried to get at least one episode set for each doctor. Then we get to eleven... oh dear, I was trying to hold out, I was excited because more new doctor stuff, and I was more used to the doctor changing, having by then watched so many doctors, but eleven just left me a bit...unhappy? I really didn't like amy pond and beyond her trying to cheat on Rory (cheating is one of my biggest dislikes in stories) but yeah, the complete erasure it felt of most things, and the sudden explosion of snogging, river always showing up and the doctor always lies? What? Rule one is "Don't wander off" Rule two being "Wander off" nothing about lying or killing, and the stories becoming always "some mysterious thing that is creepy" stupid makes no sense explanation from the doctor, it wasn't fun, i got really sick of everyone suddenly deciding the doctor was the most important thing in the universe and everyone going back and forth with either scolding the doctor over how scary he was, or about how powerful he was. It was frustrating since, he really was just a dork with a box, who was clever, and had a strong sense of justice and right and wrong. Women became terrible at this point, with amy allowed to shout people down because "she's a WOMAN and SCOTTISH and HOT" but the doctor and rory discussing her like a thing. I had hopes for clara but her run became even more toxic and the stories and the doctors actions got progressively worse and worse as time went on. so I've all but given up, I'm going to attempt with the new doctor, but I don't have high hopes.
