Another interesting sword in an upcoming auction;
“Rare 1796 Model English Cavalry Officer's Sword with Beautiful Etched Hilt & Blade ~ By OSBORN & GUNBY. Total length (inside scabbard if present) : 37 1/4", Blade length :31 3/4"
Fortunately, the auction catalogue includes excellent photos, which clearly show the ‘Crown over 4′ British Ordnance acceptance stamp marking the blade as having started life as a 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry troopers’ sword. Sometime later it has been re-hilted with a horn grip, given beautiful frost etching and extra detailing to the hilt.
Certainly, a lot of effort went into the work, unfortunately we do not know when it was done and by whom. What we do know is that this was never a British Officers’ Sword, its trooper’s sword that someone re-purposed. It could have been a trophy sword re-mounted, it could have been sold out of surplus or it was a talented artist’s personal project...Too much time has passed for us to ever know.
