How can you tell highly conditioned vs programmed alters apart?
The symptoms of programming are different. Each part is programmed to serve a specific function such as maintaining contact, reporting information, self-injuring if rules are broken, and disrupting the therapeutic process.
Conditioning tends to rely on the external for a response programming can be triggered internally.

"Why are you pretending I'm a person?" with Niner and Billie maybe?

Angry Niner! Or well... just frustrated beyond all else.

Person or Pet?
Niner walked away from Billie holding his hands over his ears. They had been relentless all morning, bombarding him with questions it was giving him a headache. He didn't like talking, much less talking about his status as a pet. He cringed at their touch as their hand rested on his shoulder.
"Niner, talk to me. What's got you so upset? You can tell me." Billie offered gently to the distressed boy.
Whumper weekly, Comfort series: Blindfold
Keep your whumpee blindfolded until it’s time to hurt them. This way, the only time they use their sight is when you are having your fun. The blindfold will become their only comfort and a safety, one that your whumpee will never want to leave. If you toss them out, they are rescued, or you release them, they will be terrified when caretaker tries to take off their blindfold, and they will even think the caretaker will hurt them. Recovery will be a slow and difficult process. The whumpee will experience a sense of loss as they realize they can’t enjoy visual things anymore because it brings them too much anxiety. Things like books, art, the sky, trees, pretty birds, and flowers are lost to them until they can get over their fear of seeing.

"What can I do for you to understand?"
CW: Recovering whumpee, references to torture, scars
"What can I do to get you to understand, Dan?"
"My name is Red and I belong to Abraham D-Denner."
"God damn it, not that again." Ryan groans, slumped in his chair in the living room, watching his brother - what's left of him anyway - sitting on the floor with his knees pulled up to his chin. The muzzle scars are deeply red, cutting across pale freckled skin like a river marked on a map, and he's been rubbing his jaw again. Blood smears mar the line on one side.
Danny doesn't look at him. He rarely looks directly at anyone, but Ryan catches him sometimes, looking Ryan's direction when he thinks no one notices.
Like he's staring at a ghost, or like he's already dead, a ghost staring at the family left behind to mourn him.
Ryan wonders if his brother is even still there inside this shattered, broken, frightened man who won't even answer to his own fucking name.
"Listen to me. Listen. It's over, you're safe now. They got the guy, he'll go to prison. No one's gonna string you up and cut you apart ever again. Ever."
Danny swallows, and ducks his head to rest his chin on his knees, curly red hair falling in waves over his eyes.
"It's, um. Not over." His voice is a whisper. "It's never over until Abraham is done."
truth serum for Brody, do you ever miss Kayla and Aries?
Every muscle in his body tenses. His breathing jams and his hands go clammy immediately. He swallows hard, looking like he’s going to be sick. His jaw is squeezed together so hard it’s shaking.
“Mm-hm” he barely manages, nodding his head.
He tells himself the tears are from fear.
