Romans 12:21 (NLT) - Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.
War & Politics: Conquer Evil with Good
We are continuing our series answering the questions of "war & politics". In this post we talk about how to conquer evil with good, which is a crucial point in my framework. For this reason, this post is larger and deeper in scope than the others.
One of the most compelling axioms of our time is the saying “when good men do nothing, evil prevails.” When we look around and see what is being done to babies, how our children are being mutilated, and our society is becoming cruel, desperate, and corrupt, I think we yearn from the deepest recesses of our soul for justice. We look for answers that tell us what we can do about the evils we see…
“Never pay back evil with evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable.” (Romans 12:17)
But if we don’t retaliate they will walk all over us. That’s the worldly thinking that comes to my mind when I read this passage.
Being a parent for a while now, I’ve see bullying or kids picking on each other quite a bit. How does it stop? Many times I’ve prayed about it for my kids and others. After reading this passage and the ones following it, the remedy is action, not retaliation.
Verse 19 says, “Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. Instead, if your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.”
The initial evil will continue long-term if no action is taken. Returning evil may stop the issue short-term, but the issue of the heart will never end unless there is repentance and healing. It’s not the person you’re trying to conquer, it’s evil. Only good can battle and win against evil, good non-fearing action and trust in the Lord’s righteous anger will win people and remove the evil from you and them.
“Gentlemen, you know that our wealth comes from this business. But as you have seen and heard, this man Paul has persuaded many people that handmade gods are not really gods at all. I’m not just talking about the loss of public respect, but the goddess Artemis will lose its influence (Acts 19:25-27)
This is Demetrius a silversmith talking to his craftsmen. They manufacture silver shrines of the goddess Artemis for a living and are about to cause an uproar, even a riot in the town against Paul’s preaching.
Many Jews and Gentiles were accepting the message of Christ to the point of causing this much uproar. How powerful is Paul’s message of Christ and how volatile is their confidence in their god for Paul to disrupt centuries of worship and tradition in three months.
It’s great reminder that everything not of Christ is evil. He has complete authority on earth and will eventually come to remove it all. Thankfully, we can use His authority to conquer evil in the meantime.
To edify the Ephesians, it’s easy to find confidence or even worship a physical object you can see, instead of a god you cannot. Christians do it to with the cross and even the Bible.

July 21--Just For Today--Putting Off Vengeance
Just for Today I will put off all…VENGEANCE Beloved, do not avenge yourselves,…for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay” says the Lord. Romans 12:19 (NKJV)
Today’s Thought: Vengeance is the desire for revenge, it is usually described as a great desire to do harm or retaliate against someone who has caused us harm in someway. The Lord reminds us in His word that we should put off vengeance and put on love, for He will avenge us in His way and in His time. “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink, and they will be ashamed of what they have done to you. Don’t let evil get the best of you, but conquer evil by doing good.” Romans 12:20-21 (NLT)
Today’s Prayer: Dear Lord, Just for Today, with Your help, I will put off any Vengeance I see in my life. If my enemy is hungry, may I have the compassion to feed him and if he is thirsty, I pray I will desire to give him a drink. For in so doing I may cause him to be ashamed of his actions towards me and perhaps he will be moved to repentance. If not, let the vengeance come from You, Lord, not me, according to Your word. Just for Today, Lord, may my heart be set upon right things. May my heart seek only to do what is right and leave all the vengeance to You, dear Lord. May I say as David said to Saul: “Let the LORD judge between you and me, and let the LORD avenge me on you. But my hand shall not be against you.”1 Samuel 24:12 (NKJV)
