@amateur-artist Merry Christmas! I hope you enjoy!
It’s been so long since you’ve heard anything above a whisper.
Noise is terrifying and comforting all at once.
Birds singing sweetly means there are no natural predators stalking you.
Birds singing sweetly means you can’t listen for the soft footsteps of the dead machines.
The silence is all encompassing and overwhelming.
There is nothing to distract you from your thoughts except the terror of being caught and processed.
There is nothing to distract you from your thoughts except the terror of being caught and eaten.
You look for hope in small places.
A flower, glittering with morning dew in the sunlight. So beautiful, in a world so broken.
A tree, covered in moss, soft and comforting.
A deadbolt in a basement, just one night of uninterrupted rest with the illusion of security.
To stay in one place is a death sentence. You are alone. Any dwelling you find will not be fortified. You cannot tell where you will be infected. You must keep moving. You must stay vigilant.
You are always in danger.
You are always exhausted.
You are tense and ready run. You just want to lay down. You look around and pay attention to everything you hear. You just want to block the world out, for once. You stay calm and alert. You want to sob and wail and mourn the life you had before. You want to scream and kick and rage at the life you live. You want to relax and prance about and be at peace with a life free of all of it.
You want to lay down and sleep until moss covers you and insect make their home in your heart.
You just want a bit of rest.
Please
Please. Just a minute hour day week month year decade century eon forever. Just a moment where you aren’t fighting a war against the world. Just a second where nothing is out to get you. Just a small oasis of time, where you can simply be.
Please
I’m so tired
I just saw something on the local news about crisis fatigue and if that doesn’t describe the mental state so many of us are in right now I don’t know what does
Well it’s been nearly 5 months of stress and anxiety but we finally got a replacement housemate 🙌
If you're wondering what journalism school is like, it goes like this:
You don't want to harass people, but you're on deadline, so you have to harass them. You call the expert you wanted for your enterprise piece a third time. Someone tells you she'll get back to you by the end of the day. Your deadline is at 6pm.
Just when you think you're going to have to re-work your story because you don't have the source you were supposed to get, you get a call at 4:53 pm from the CEO you needed -- an hour and seven minutes before deadline. You have a mini heart attack. The CEO tells you they have a meeting at 5pm so you have 7 minutes. You finish the interview in 5 minutes with everything you need.
You insert the quotes into your piece and run into the studio to record your narration. You have a sore throat and your voice keeps giving out midway through sentences, so you have to record yourself saying the same thing over and over again 20 times. You get something that's useable. You want to cry tears of joy. You submit your piece with 15 minutes to spare and get on the train, feeling like you've just run a marathon. You also have an insatiable craving for tea.
That's journalism school in a nutshell -- always feeling like you're going to utterly fail until a source comes through at the last second and saves you and you realize God must be real.
