The Final Contingency

Years ago Bruce learned the Joker was trying to make an incurable venom. He knows he needs a measure in place in case he's ever infected.

CW: major character death, assisted suicide

"Kho?"

"Yes, Bruce?"

The man known as Ghostmaker wanders the streets of a city he hadn't crossed the boundaries of in years, respecting his old friend's wishes. He was procrastinating. But then who wouldn't?

A corner girl approaches him, but is easily waived off.

Perhaps it's a sign he should move.

He has a promise to keep.

The trek to the "Batcave," oh Bruce was always so indulgent with his strays, passes in a blur. Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, it's occupied. Nightwing rises to greet him with red rimmed eyes, voice cracking. "Ghost Maker. This isn't a good time."

He wants to ignore the welp, but considering the circumstances. "Ghost Maker answering contingency activation: O38945z3."

Oracle looks unsurprised, then again, she's the one who summoned him. Some of the others look confused, but Red Robin is quickly furious, staff out and blocking his path. "No. You aren't needed. We haven't exhausted all our options. We can still-"

Oracle looks regretful as the rest of the "family" collapses, tranq darts sticking out of their necks. "Maker can you help me before you...?"

They are moved into a lounge area. The air is tense. "Please, just do what you came here for and go. I'll handle them when they wake up."

Khoa sighs, reluctantly leaving the girl with her siblings, and heads for the containment rooms. He passes by the temporary cells into the section for long term personal containment. It shouldn't surprise him, but seeing a clearly drugged Jason Todd in a cell is certainly unexpected. "Khoa, what are you?..."

He moves past the boy like his moniker, desire to leave this cursed city getting stronger by the second. Finally, he reaches the cell he's looking for, entering a code and stepping in the air lock.

Hahahahahha....

The figure in the cell is familiar, but the straitjacket, pale skin and cursed grin doesn't belong. "Bruce. Do you know who I am?"

"Oh....Khoa dear! Hahaha hahaha! Have you come to visit little old Brucie? If you just take off this jacket then we can go have some fun!"

"Bruce. I know it doesn't mean much, but I want you to know that I lied. There wasn't anyone else. I always regretted saying no to you."

"Hahahaha! Khoa babe. You sound so serious! Why don't you let me put a smile on your face? Hahahaha"

Khoa slips his mask back on, pulling out his blade with a grim face. Bruce is still laughing. Still chatting.

Bruce's head hits the floor, the room silent except for Khoa's harsh breathing. He stumbles out of the room, leaving the sullied blade behind. There's one final thing he needs to do.

A code on the panel fills the room with flames. The Lazarus Pits won't work on ashes, and too many people in Bruce's life wouldn't respect his wishes given the chance.

Khoa doesn't respond to Jason as he passes by his cell. He doesn't stop til he's hours from Gotham, suddenly exhausted as he stares over some busy harbor. He pulls out a Batarang that he pickpocketed off of his Bat once, approaching the edge of the harbor and tossing it into the sea. "Goodbye Bruce. I hope you're happy wherever you are now."

Pure Comedy.

Bruce has contingencies, they get stolen constantly in the future the pattern doesn't change.

The only problem the most powerful heroes while they do have contingencies are never ones that Batman has access too.

Leading to a very hilarious exchange.

Alice Wayne (StephCass) listening to a monologue from the villain of the week another one that manage to hack the unhackable bat computer and after today she's starting a petition to change the name to Arkham 2.0 barley any effort and your in.

"All of your fellow bats have been taken down-"

Didn't even get to finish before Nightwing and Hood knocked his ass out.

Lilith Drake lurking somewhere above. She can feel the arrogance.

"How the fuck did you guys get out?" Seriously sometimes it seems like none of her mom's badassness rubbed off it's annoying. Doesn't help the amount of superpowers now possessed by the cousins.

"In what world does Kyptonite and liquid nitrogen work? Come on... the man didn't even try." Ignoring John's everything.

"Those were grandpas contingency plans?"

Lily had jumped down mask fully off something that said grandparent would be furious with if her Uncles weren't annoying him while the children galavant around Gotham.

"Yeah, so they don't work?" That doesn't process.

"The fuck you mean they don't work-He's Batman?!?!"

All three just stare.

Lily gasps some lightbulb goes off.

"Oh my god, do you mean that Aunt Cass gives grandpa your weakness?"

"I'm human unlike you assholes I don't need a random rock poke me and I bleed but do you mean to say-"

"First off skill issue, second no way in hell is my dad giving out a way to kill me Uncle Dick would have grandpa's head if he tried that withJohn and Uncle Jason doesn't trust grandpa as far as he can throw him?" Drake practically splutters.

"This is fucking favoritism! If I'm getting tired up so should you people!!!" John is fucking laughing.

"It sounds like our Dad's are better at being paranoid imagine your Mom trusting grandpa!!"

"COULDN'T BE ME." They chorus

"The only one who has any plan for us is Uncle Tim and Lily would mindwipe his ass quicker than shit. If he didn't just decide his princess is going evil so time to get in the fucking boat." Harper adds.

"Uncle Jason should have fucking aborted you." princess snarks.

"Seriously though why would your mom help grandpa? I feel like that's a CPS call." Muses Percy.

"I don't know what if we need to be taken down contingency plans are importantl hello Batman number five hundred your dad is Mr. Contingency plan?" If she had a brick she would pull a mom.

The Drakes have very hittable faces.

"Yeah my Dad, and his are kept under lock and key grandpa's aren't even leaked on Twitter they have their own tag"

"I'm filing a complaint with HR this is misogyny! Homophobia a hate crime." Bullshit she's gonna sue.

"Isn't HR just Dad in a different shirt?" Percy and Lily nod Uncle Dick is the best representative, always willing to yell at grandpa.

"Sucks to suck now let's go I want the food that is now cold cause someone got kidnapped." John grumbles while ripping the bindings.

"Sorry my parents want to protect people!"

"Hmm yet I didn't get kidnapped."

"Fuck you drake."

"Bite me bitch."

"This is why grandpa doesn't fucking love you or should I say Aunt Cass."

"That's it-"

"John go rescue Alice before she pun-" CRACK

"Your face broke my hand-"

"Dont worry I'll tell Grandpa before Vicki show's up.

"The court owls really weren't that bad-"

"Dad didn't need to leave the coffin."

"ALICE DONT- LILITH NO TEETH."

So after sitting on this for an entire day I decided I had to make a special post about it because Goddamn.

I think you ALL should go read Contingency Planning by @oodlyenough because it's genuinely sO fucking good my friend and I spent the better part of last night screaming about it and it still came up several times today we are NOT over it.

Spoiler-free screaming to give you an idea of hoW INSANE IT MADE US, and then spoiler-screaming under the cut!! For context my friend read it earlier in the day and then I read it at night so this is mostly me yelling at her as I'm reading!

@oodlyenough THANK YOU for this beautiful piece of writing, you've destroyed us but we enjoyed it immensely :)) I know you wrote this 2,5 years ago but hopefully you will still enjoy these reviews (aka incoherent screaming) <3

Ou of all the Robin's who has your favorite and least favorite uniform ?

So my fav is 100% dick’s og costume or any of damians!!

Dicks is just classic. It’s representative of the era, and generally just has this boyish charm? To me, it really conveys what Robin is about: light, hope, and beginnings. We all love to make fun of underwear/shorts thing but I think it just contributes to how free the design feels. The sleeves are loose and the cape is still fully yellow, no black outer lining. It feels like it was thrown together as what a kid thought was cool, with no regard to other factors (like safety lmao). I think it’s a staple and all the vibrancy works w the bird motif.

I love damians bc he’s my fav character. His “first” costume in Batman and son is literally a stolen dick/jason era tunic (I think??) over his LoA uniform. Which I think is really representative of his story in that arc too. Like he’s still Of The League at the point, but trying to learn, to become one of the bats, but he doesn’t fully understand yet so all his attempts are thin veneers (e.g. the tunic that is barely and obviously covering his league uniform). His Batman and Robin (2009) costume is really cute too! I love how it’s formfitting and honestly completely fits what I think he’d want out of the outfit. His inclusion of the hood adds his personal spin to robin too. I don’t have much to say ab this one other than it’s just cute !! I’m a big fan. His supersons costume is also adorable! The little skirt thing he added? The skull clip? It really feels like he grew more comfy w robin and decided to add more of his own flairs. It also reminds me a bit of dianas armor and she’s the coolest so. That said! I’m not really a fan of his Robin (2021) outfit TT I like the shapes and where the parts are, but the colors make me sad. Damian is kinda edgy but robins colors are red, green, and yellow, the stark absence of them (in any big part) is quite jarring. I didn’t read robin tho so maybe there’s a canon reason for it? Either way, not a fan.

My LEAST favorite design is def tim’s… tights under one piece action. Idk why but it’s bothers me soooo much. Like the red to the green in those proportions is so so so ugly and tacky to me. Like I’m not against hero underwear but I hate it in this solid one piece thing going on.
